In the Netherlands, there are approximately 750,000 motorbikes on the road. So you are certainly not the only one who has had questions about a suitable insurance policy. Taking out motorbike insurance as a beginner

A motorbike licence consists of three different classes. Depending on your age and the class of the motorbike, you can get a licence and ride a motorbike. This applies mainly to young drivers, as they are not allowed to drive every class of motorbike. The three different classes are:

  • Light motorbike, licence A1;
  • Medium-duty motorbike, A2 licence;
  • Heavy motorbike, licence A.

With driving licence A you are allowed to ride all different kinds of motorbikes, but not vice versa. It is wise to check this before taking out a motorbike insurance. The premium can be different for each class.

Different coverages for your rookie motorbike

Like all other motorised vehicles permitted on Dutch roads, a motorbike must have at least a third-party insurance. However, there are more comprehensive coverages than just third-party insurance. Third-party insurance is the least comprehensive insurance. In addition, you can choose from: Limited Comprehensive Vehicle insurance and All-Risk insurance. The WA insurance also covers theft and fire damage and the All-Risk insurance also covers damage that you cause to your own motorbike.

Depending on your wishes, you can take out a cover. It is also good to make an assessment based on the value and age of the motorbike you have. With a 12-year old motorbike, the cost of an All Risk insurance probably does not outweigh the compensation you will receive in the event of a claim. This is different with a brand new motorbike.

Claim-free years and the amount of motor insurance for the novice driver

As with car insurance, you can also build up claim-free years with motorbike insurance. As a starting driver you don't have any claim-free years yet, but you can build them up. If you are no longer a beginner driver, the number of claim-free years can provide a substantial discount on your insurance. This way you get a cheaper motorbike insurance.

New value of motor insurance for the novice driver

If you have bought a new motorbike and you are going to take out a motorbike insurance policy, you can also choose the new-for-old value arrangement. With the new-for-old value scheme, most insurers will insure your motorbike for the new-for-old value for three years. You can take out this scheme for all three types of cover.
