Additional Coverage for Greater Peace of Mind

In addition to choosing the right coverage for your motorcycle insurance, you can also compare and purchase various types of supplemental coverage.

Accidental occupants

Passenger accident insurance pays a fixed amount to the driver and/or passenger in the event of a motorcycle accident.

Passenger damage

Passenger liability insurance covers damages incurred by the rider and passengers following a motorcycle accident. These damages may include property damage (clothing, luggage, etc.), loss of income, household assistance, transportation costs, medical expenses, compensation for pain and suffering, and funeral expenses.

Legal Aid

Legal expense insuranceprovides legal advice and expert legal assistance in the event of damage to or involving your motorcycle.

Which motorcycle insurance is right for you?

Motorcycle insurance is mandatory. However, you may also choose one of the other two types, as they also include third-party liability coverage. Third-party liability insurance never covers damage to your motorcycle. The insurer only compensates for damage caused to others. The insurer will pay out for any damages for which you or the motorcycle’s driver is legally liable. If you cause a motorcycle accident, your insurer will compensate the other party for their damages.

Opting for the more comprehensive limited comprehensive coverage

For a slightly higher premium, you can also opt for the more comprehensive limited comprehensive coverage. In addition to coverage for civil liability, this insurance also provides coverage for any of the following causes of damage:

  • Broken window
    Theft or attempted theft
    Hail damage and storm damage
    Fire and explosion
    Collision with stray animals
    Lightning damage

If a claim is paid out due to one of these causes, it will not affect your number of claim-free years. An accident you cause will cost you 5 claim-free years, but theft, for example, will not cost you any claim-free years.

Many claim-free years make the comprehensive policy attractive

With each claim-free year, you earn a discount on your motorcycle insurance. As you accumulate more claim-free years, the most comprehensive insurance becomes more affordable. This means it may be more cost-effective to opt for comprehensive coverage rather than one of the more limited coverage options. Even if your motorcycle is still relatively low in value, you’ll still want the best possible coverage.

Motorcycle Insurance for a Classic Motorcycle

There is a special classic motorcycle insurance policy for classic motorcycles.

Is your motorcycle 20 years old or older? Does it travel no more than 7,500 kilometers per year? And do you have another motorcycle for everyday use? If so, you may be eligible for classic motorcycle insurance. The premium for this type of insurance is significantly lower. The cheapest classic motorcycle insurance starts at just 2 euros per month.

Getting Motorcycle Insurance as a New Driver

A motorcycle license consists of 3 different classes. Depending on your age and the class of the motorcycle, you can obtain a license and ride a motorcycle. This mainly applies to young riders, since they are not permitted to ride every class of motorcycle. The 3 different classes are:

  1. Light motorcycle, A1 driver's license;
  2. Medium-weight motorcycle, A2 driver's license;
  3. Heavy motorcycle, Class A driver's license.

With a Class A driver's license, you can ride all types of motorcycles, but not the other way around. It's a good idea to check this first before you purchase motorcycle insurance. The premium can vary depending on the class.

Motor Insurance Replacement Value Policy

If you've bought a new motorcycle and are taking out motorcycle insurance, you can also choose the replacement value option. With the replacement value option, most insurers will insure your motorcycle at its replacement value for 3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorcycle Insurance

How much does motorcycle insurance cost?

When you want to purchase insurance, a number of factors play a role in determining the cost of your motorcycle insurance. These include your chosen coverage, age, number of claim-free years, and ZIP code. If you purchase additional coverage, this will also affect the amount of your insurance premium.

To find out how much motorcycle insurance will cost you, we recommend using the calculator.

What are the theft requirements for a motorcycle?

The theft requirements for motorcycle insurance vary by insurance company. You can find these requirements in the policy terms and conditions that apply to your motorcycle insurance. The theft requirements apply only to limited comprehensive and comprehensive (all-risk) coverage.

ART Category 4-approved lock

All insurance companies require, at a minimum, anART Category 4-approved lock.

What is winter break coverage?

With some insurance companies, you can save on your motorcycle insurance premium by opting for “winter hiatus” coverage. Under this coverage, damage caused by riding the motorcycle is not covered during the winter. This period typically runs from December 15 to March 1. However, damage caused by fire or theft from the garage is still covered.

Will your motorcycle be stored indoors all winter? If so, you can choose a motorcycle insurance policy that includes winter storage coverage. If you ride your motorcycle year-round, winter storage coverage isn’t necessary. You can indicate whether you’d like to include this coverage when requesting a quote.

Is wearing motorcycle gear required?

There are a number of requirements for motorcycle insurance, but motorcycle gear is not required. The primary purpose of motorcycle gear is to protect the rider from injuries caused by a fall.

But the clothing is also designed for comfort. The wind can’t get a grip on the material, so the motorcycle gear doesn’t flap around like a flag in the wind. The clothing also ensures good visibility.

Compared to cars, motorcyclists are less visible to other road users. Motorcycle gear also provides good ventilation.

A slip on a motorcycle can quickly lead to serious injury—even at low speeds. Even if you’re wearing motorcycle gear, you’ll likely still sustain injuries in a major slip, but the right gear can help minimize the consequences.

Is motorcycle insurance required?

In the Netherlands, it is mandatory to insure every motor vehicle that is driven on the road. Therefore, taking out motorcycle insurance is required. But why is that? Accidents can happen at any moment, and they can result in property damage or personal injury. These costs can quickly add up.

With insurance, you’re at least covered for any damage you cause to someone else. If someone else causes damage to you, it’s covered by the other party’s insurance. In addition to being mandatory, good liability insurance can give you peace of mind.

What are the consequences of driving without motorcycle insurance?

As soon as you register a license plate in your name, you are required to have insurance. You are also in violation of the law if you drive without motorcycle insurance. This can have serious financial consequences. In addition to the police, the RDW can also impose a fine.

There are four major drawbacks to driving without insurance:

  1. The RDW may impose a fine of €400 (they may do so three times a year);
  2. You risk a €550 fine from the police if you are stopped;
  3. You're responsible for paying for any damage you cause while driving;
  4. If you drive without insurance for too long, only expensive insurers will accept your application. That's reason enough not to drive without insurance, but to find a good insurance policy.

Can you take out motorcycle insurance in someone else's name?

Many young people consider taking out motorcycle insurance in their parents’ names. That might seem appealing, but it’s a risky choice. If you take out insurance, you must also be the one held responsible. The registered owner of the vehicle is always the person required to carry insurance.

If you fail to disclose who the actual, regular driver is, you are committing insurance fraud. The consequences can be severe: the insurer may refuse to pay for damages, which could amount to hundreds of thousands.

Therefore, always be honest and transparent when taking out insurance. This will help you avoid problems and ensure that you are properly insured.
