To give you a helping hand, we have developed a handy online tool on Alpina.nl that allows you to easily compare different motor home insurances. Once you have found your camper insurance, you can take out an insurance policy directly online. This way you can soon go on vacation with your camper without any worries!
Is RV insurance mandatory?
Yes, RV insurance is mandatory. This is because a camper is a motorized vehicle. In the Netherlands, you are required to take out at least third-party coverage for every motorized vehicle. With a WA motor home insurance you are insured for damage you cause to another person with your motor home. In the best-case scenario, this is eye damage, but there may also be personal injury. After a serious accident, in which one or more persons are injured, the costs can run into thousands of euros. To prevent you from not being able to pay this and thus the victims from receiving financial compensation, motorhome insurance is mandatory.
Motorhome insurance coverages
Civil liability (WA)
This is the basic and cheapest coverage in a motorhome insurance policy. It covers the damage you cause with your motorhome to third parties, but not damage to your own motorhome.
Limited casco (WA plus or WA+)
In addition to the third-party coverage, damage to your motorhome is now also covered for fire, theft, storm and window breakage on a motorhome insurance policy. Damage to your own motorhome that you have caused yourself (through a collision, for example) is not covered.
Full hull (all risk)
This is the most comprehensive coverage in motorhome insurance. Everything covered under limited hull is covered, but now all damage to your own motorhome is also covered.
Additional motorhome insurance coverages
Recourse Legal Assistance
For damage caused by others, you can hold the person responsible liable. If your camper has comprehensive insurance, the insurer will do that for you. With the WA and WA limited casco you do it yourself. Legal assistance also entitles you to legal assistance. This can be useful in case of legal issues with the other party.
Claims passenger insurance
Due to an accident, your passengers may also suffer damages. It can be material damage or personal injury. The amount of material damage is often manageable. The same is certainly not true of personal injury. The passengers' health insurance company will cover the medical expenses, but the financial damage can be much greater. In the case of permanent disability, the damage can run into the hundreds of thousands of euros. The passenger indemnity insurance pays out a maximum of €400,000 in an accident. The driver of the motorhome also receives benefits in the event of damage. Of course, you cannot claim damage to the motorhome on this additional insurance.
What does RV insurance cost?
What is the best RV insurance?
The best RV insurance depends on your personal situation and needs. There are several insurance companies that offer RV insurance, so it is important to compare the different options to find the best insurance for you. Look at the coverage, cost and extras offered with each insurance policy. For example, if you travel a lot, it might be wise to choose insurance with a broad coverage area. If you have a smaller budget, you may want to choose insurance with a lower premium. It's important to compare all options to find the best RV insurance that suits you.
Claim-free years with motorhome insurance
Claim-free years make RV insurance more affordable. This is because they entitle you to a discount on the premium. By taking out insurance in your name, you build up claim-free years. Not claiming any damage during the insurance year entitles you to one claim-free year. By claiming, on the other hand, you lose claim-free years.
Motorhome and road tax
When you take your RV on the road, you have to pay road tax. Is your motorhome 40 years old or older? Then you don't pay road tax. The amount of road tax depends on the weight of your RV, where you live and the type of fuel. Often RVs are only used for a few weeks a year and a more favorable rate applies than for passenger cars.
Self-built campers and motorhome insurance
Do you have a self-built motorhome? If so, it is also possible to insure it through us on a motorhome insurance policy. In most cases without an additional inspection report. Is your self-built camper fitted as a camper and also approved as such by the RDW? Then it is no problem to have it insured as a camper. Easily calculate the premium for a self-built camper online.
Insuring the inventory of your RV
Motorhome insurance does not provide coverage for damage to inventory. This is because it is not part of the motorhome, thus excluded for motorhome insurance. Nevertheless, a fully equipped motorhome represents a high value of inventory. You can co-insure the inventory up to a maximum of €10,000. Regardless of the coverage chosen for the motorhome, compensation is given for the stolen inventory in case of burglary. That is, if you have additional insurance.
Motorhome insurance including green card
Our motorhome insurance always includes the green card. The green card was mainly used at border controls to show that your camper was insured. Usually you don't need the green card anymore, because since 2003 authorities within the EU countries use the license plate of your camper for this purpose. Do you have insurance but have you lost your green card? Then you can apply for this free of charge.
RV breakdown assistance
Most motorhome insurance policies offer roadside assistance coverage abroad. It varies by insurer how extensive this coverage is. For example, some insurers only reimburse necessary costs to take the motorhome to a repair shop, and others also reimburse replacement transportation.
Transportation of the camper to the Netherlands is usually reimbursed if the camper cannot be repaired within a number of working days and if the costs for transportation do not exceed the current market value of the camper. It also varies per insurer whether roadside assistance is included in the basic coverage of the motor home insurance, or whether you have to take out additional coverage. This can be seen in the policy conditions of the insurance.
With most insurers, you have coverage for roadside assistance in the countries listed on the green card. These are the same European countries where you have coverage with RV insurance.

Am I required to have seat belts in an RV?
The registration certificate of a newer motorhome shows how many seats it has. These seats are equipped with seat belts. In that case, the rule is: seats with seat belts may be used while driving, other seats may not. Read more
Do I need a green card when I go abroad?
RV insurance is in effect in those countries for which the green card has been issued. This means that the countries NOT crossed out on the back of the green card are insured. Read more
Is there a deductible for RV insurance?
With WA-extra or All-risk coverage, there is usually a deductible. However, this depends on the insurer. Excess means that in case of damage to the motorhome, you first pay a certain amount yourself.
Some insurers do not apply a deductible with RV insurance. However, you will often pay a higher insurance premium for the RV insurance. It is also possible that the excess is optional. You choose whether you want a deductible or not.
With a higher deductible, you get more premium discounts. However, most insurers have a mandatory deductible. Insurers usually differentiate between types of damage with the deductible. For example, a different deductible applies for theft than for windshield damage.
Finally, the deductible is usually lower if you have the damage repaired by a repairer affiliated with the insurer. In the policy conditions of the insurance you can always find out if there is a deductible and how high it is.
Can you temporarily insure an RV?
If you want to temporarily insure an RV, there are two options:
- You take out regular insurance for your RV. If you no longer want to insure the camper, you can suspend the insurance. To do so, you must suspend the license plate at the RDW and the camper must be off the public road.
- Take out temporary insurance through our website. This is temporary insurance if you are going to export the motorhome abroad.
With most RV insurance, the company has taken into account the fact that you are not going to drive the RV all year. Therefore, the premium is comparatively cheaper than insurance for a passenger car.
Is my motorhome insured if I lend it out?
Yes, the motorhome is insured when you lend it out, but only when this is not of a business nature. If you lend the motorhome to a family member or an acquaintance, for example, this is no problem. However, you should be aware that the person to whom you lend the campervan may also cause damage. This can affect your excess and any accumulated damage-free years. So be careful when lending your campervan.
Are you renting out your motorhome? Then indicate this when you take out the insurance. The insurer will charge an additional fee for renting out the motorhome. It is important to read the terms and conditions of the insurance policy to know if the insurance will cover renting out the RV. If you rent out your RV, it is also important to use an alarm company to protect your RV from theft.
What does an insurer understand by recreational use?
When you purchase RV insurance, you specify how the RV will be used: daily or recreational. An insurer differentiates between these because the risk may differ for each type of use.
By recreational use, an insurer understands that you use the motorhome for weekends away, vacations or possibly day trips. Whether this is in the Netherlands or abroad makes no difference.
If a motorhome is also used for commuting, the risk to the insurer is higher, which affects the amount of the insurance premium. Are you only going on vacation with the motorhome? Then you are using the motorhome recreationally.
What driver's license do I need for an RV?
A car driving license is required to drive a motorhome. For motorhomes with a maximum weight of up to 3500 pounds and up to 8 people, a B or BE driving license is sufficient. The weight is the total of the motorhome, load and weight of the occupants.
Drivers of heavier motorhomes up to 7,500 pounds must hold a C or C1 truck driving license. For motorhomes with more than 8 seats plus driver, a D or D1 driver's license is required.
Do I need an international driver's license for an RV abroad?
For most European destinations, a driving license BE is sufficient to drive a motorhome without an international driver's license. If the trip is to Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa or Cuba, an international driving license is required.
For America it is not compulsory, but can be very useful if you do not speak the English language sufficiently. Through the website of the ANWB you can see per country whether or not the international driver's license is mandatory.
Is a trailer behind an RV allowed?
It is allowed to hitch a trailer behind the motorhome. For this, the same rules apply as for a passenger car with a trailer. With a driving license BE, a trailer is allowed with a total maximum weight of 750 kilos.
Importantly, the weight of the trailer and load will not be added to the total weight of 3500 kilos. For holders of the BE driver's license issued before Jan. 19, 2013, different rules apply. These drivers may use any trailer without weight restrictions.
