Suspension period

If you decide to suspend your motorhome, there are a number of rules to consider. In principle, you can suspend your camper for an entire year. The suspension will start on the day you indicate you want to suspend your camper. If you indeed want to save on the expenses mentioned above, make sure that the suspension of your camper lasts at least one month. This is because if you lift the suspension within one month, you will still have to pay road tax for that period. The Inland Revenue will send you an after-tax bill, and as a result, the suspension made little sense.

Extend term camper suspension

There may be times when you don't use your camper for an entire year. Perhaps you have no vacation plans for once, maybe other reasons play a role in leaving your camper in storage. In that case, remember to extend the period of one year to suspend your motorhome before its expiration. By the way, since 2019, you can also choose to arrange your RV suspension directly for two or three years. But keep in mind that you are thus in no case allowed on public roads during this entire period.

Public road = broad concept

The public road is a broader concept than many people think. In fact, public roads include paths and verges, the sides of roads and parking lots and parking garages if they are publicly accessible.

Cost of suspending

If your RV is less than 15 years old, the fee is €73.10. For all other motorhomes, the cost is €24.10. Do you want to extend your motorhome suspension? Then this also costs €24.10. These are the 2020 rates. If you decide to lift the suspension of your motorhome, you will not pay anything extra. Note: Have you already received a giro collection form at the time you suspend your motorhome? Just pay it. Overpaid road tax will be duly refunded by the tax authorities.

Motorhome WA Insurance Suspension

We already mentioned that during the suspension period, your RV does not need to be third-party insured. That sounds like an attractive advantage. However, it is wise to find out in advance how this is regulated by your motor home insurance. Many insurance companies already take the recreational, and therefore temporary, use of motor homes into account when determining their premiums. Are you going to purchase new insurance for your RV? Then compare the various insurers on this aspect as well.

Quickly suspend your motorhome

Suspending your RV can be done quickly and in two ways. You can choose to go to a post office. This is only possible at a number of larger post offices and at the counters of the three RDW offices in Zoetermeer, Den Bosch and Veendam. To do this, you need to bring the registration certificate (which is part 1B) plus the transfer certificate (also known as part II) of your registration certificate. Make sure you also have a valid ID with you.
Of course, you can make it easier on yourself and suspend your motorhome online. This can be done on the RDW website. The suspension takes effect immediately; you will receive confirmation by letter within a few days.

Other motorhome insurance

Above we talked about third-party insurance, which insures you for any legal liability. But you obviously have your RV insured for other things as well. It probably needs no further explanation that you should simply keep these insurances running. After all, your motor home runs the risk of being stolen or damaged even (or especially) when you are not using it. It would be unthinkable to stop the insurance and something unpleasant happens during that period, causing you a big financial disappointment.

Lift camper suspension

You can also easily lift the suspension of your motorhome online. You will need your DigiD to do this. You can end the suspension on the RDW website. Please note: you cannot specify the date for lifting the suspension in advance. The moment you wish to end the suspension, you must report this online. The termination will then take effect immediately.

Suspension and sale

Suppose you sell your RV while it is in storage and suspended by you. You do not then have to lift the suspension. Once the motorhome is transferred to the new owner's name, the suspension will be lifted immediately.
