Car insurance for the elderly

Car insurance is still important to many older people, even after retirement. Maybe you don't drive as often, but you still want to be properly insured. By comparing well, you will always find a suitable car insurance policy.

Calculate your premium

Cheap car insurance for the elderly

Why is car insurance for seniors often more expensive? Older drivers pay more for car insurance and also have fewer options. From a certain age, insurers take into account an increased risk. Often the premium goes up after age 65 and with some insurers even from age 70.

Even though many older people drive carefully, things like slower reflexes and a higher risk of injury in an accident result in different premiums. On the other hand, many older people actually drive fewer miles and have many claim-free years, which can still keep premiums low.

Getting car insurance if you are 60 or older

Getting car insurance as a 60- or 70-year-old usually does not pose any problems yet. In fact, people in their sixties generally pay a favorable premium for insurance. With certain insurers, it is not even possible to take out car insurance as a 75-year-old.

Do you already have insurance? Then you can stay insured there. Getting a new car insurance policy is sometimes more difficult but not impossible. Enter your age and see what car insurance options are available to you.

Switching car insurance later in life

Is it wise to switch at an older age? Certainly don't be put off by age limits set by insurers. Do not cancel your current insurance until you have been accepted by the new insurer. Then you won't be at risk.

Car insurance and fitness to drive: influence of medical examinations

Are you over the age of 75? Then you must get a medical exam for your driver's license every 5 years. Insurers may ask for proof that you are fit to drive, especially if there is damage. Without a valid driver's license, you may not be insured.

Claim-free years make for a cheaper premium

Damage-free years make your car insurance cheaper. The longer you do not report a claim to your insurer, the more discount you get on your premium. Check carefully if your claim-free years are registered correctly. Each additional claim-free year helps to lower the higher premium a bit.

Maximum age auto insurance seniors

The maximum age at which you can purchase insurance varies among insurers. Some insurers have no age limit. For insurers that do have a maximum age limit, it is often between 70 and 80. Therefore, compare different insurance policies to see with which insurer your age is not a problem.

Choose from 3 coverages

There is no special car insurance for the elderly in the Netherlands. The 3 standard forms of car insurance apply to every age group. You have a choice of WA, WA limited casco and Allrisk. Compare the coverage and determine what you need.

WA (mandatory)

  • Damage to others
  • Theft, joyriding and missing.
  • Window damage
  • Damage caused by fire or natural disasters
  • Own damage from a collision

Limited casco

  • Damage to others
  • Theft, joyriding and missing.
  • Window damage
  • Damage caused by fire or natural disasters
  • Own damage from a collision

All Risk (WA+Casco)

  • Damage to others
  • Theft, joyriding and missing.
  • Window damage
  • Damage caused by fire or natural disasters
  • Own damage from a collision

Third-party insurance

When you buy a car, you should immediately purchase at least third-party insurance. This insurance covers damage you cause to others. For cars of 10 years or older, people often choose only the compulsory third-party insurance. This insurance does not cover damage to your own car.

WA limited hull insurance

A good alternative with broader coverage is the third-party limited collision insurance. This coverage compensates not only damages to others. Damage due to a collision with stray animals, hail, storm, lightning, fire, explosion, broken windows, theft and attempted theft also fall under this coverage. For cars 6 to 10 years old, this coverage is often chosen.

All-risk insurance

People with a new car up to about 6 years old often choose the most comprehensive insurance, all-risk insurance. With this insurance, your own insurer also pays for damage to your own car from a collision. Damage due to vandalism is also insured with all-risk coverage.

Additional insurance options for seniors

There are also additional coverages that are useful for seniors. Consider, for example:

  • Roadside assistance. You get quick help if your car breaks down. This is nice if you want to visit family far away.
  • Comprehensive passenger insurance. This also insures your passengers for medical expenses or damage to their belongings in an accident.

Such extras make you feel safe on the road.

Save on your car insurance

Save on your car insurance by making smart choices.

  • Do you use the car only for short trips or shopping? In that case, consciously choose fewer miles per year.
  • Do you never actually drive a claim? Opt for a lower deductible.

Renewing driver's license as 65+

There are different rules for renewing your driver's license when you are 65 or older than when you have not yet reached this age. In fact, in many cases, your driver's license will not be valid for the usual 10 years.

65 to 70 years

Are you between 65 and 70 years old and want to renew your driver's license? Then until you reach the age of 75, you can renew your driver's license according to the usual procedure.

70 to 75 years

Are you between the ages of 70 and 75 and your driver's license expires? Then your new driver's license is valid for a maximum of 5 years. For example, are you 74 years old when your driver's license expires? Then you get a new license that you can use until 79 years of age. Without a medical examination.

75 +

If you are 75 years old or older, you must always take a medical examination when renewing your driver's license. You also fill out a health statement when you apply. Based on this, the application handler decides whether to renew your driver's license. Are the tests good? Then you get your driver's license renewed for up to 5 years.

Frequently asked questions about car insurance for the elderly

What is the best car insurance for the elderly?

It depends on your situation. Look mainly at the number of miles per year you still drive, the age of the car and desired coverage. Premiums can vary from one insurer to another. Compare several insurance policies to see which is the best option.

Is switching to cheap auto insurance for the elderly wise after retirement?

Sure. After retirement, your driving habits change and often so does your financial situation. Switching to another insurer can then pay off. Car insurance may then be cheaper or the coverage may be better for the same money.

Does car insurance get more expensive as you get older?

Yes, from about age 65 or 70, many insurers increase the premium. This is due to higher risk assessment.

Can I still drive over 75 with insurance?

Yes, as long as you are medically fit to drive and have a valid driver's license, you are insured as usual. A medical examination is mandatory.

Can I still switch car insurance if I am over 70?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Some insurers have a maximum age limit for new customers. So compare terms in advance to find the best car insurance for your situation.

Is it smart to go from All-risk to third-party coverage as a senior?

Yes, if your car is over 10 years old and worth little, this can be smart. You will save substantially on the premium without much risk.
