Insuring a car under a name other than the owner's: Is that possible?

Is it possible to take outcar insurance in a name other than the owner’s? Insurance companies are generally reluctant to agree to this. In the Netherlands, the law stipulates that the registered owner of the vehicle is required to have insurance. Therefore, he or she must insure the car.

As a vehicle owner, why wouldn’t you take out car insurance yourself, even though you’re required to do so? Below, we describe a number of situations in which this might be the case.

Car Insurance in a Partner's Name

In the case of couples, it may happen that one partner registers the vehicle in their name and is the registered owner, but the other partner wants to insure the car. Most insurers have no problem with this.

Car Insurance: Name Different from Owner's

Non-partners

When non-partners want to take out car insurance under a different name, the insurance company will often refuse to cooperate. Usually, the goal is to circumvent a registration that is in the vehicle owner’s name. Colloquially, this is also referred to as being on the“blacklist”—for example, if someone has caused a lot of accidents or had their license suspended. No such “blacklist” exists for insurance purposes. You may, however, be flagged if you’ve filed a claim with your insurer. An insurance company can always see who the registered owner of the vehicle is and will also conduct a background check on that person.

Premium Amount Depends on Age

The cost of a car insurance premium depends in part on the driver’s age. Young drivers pay higher premiums. To get around this higher premium, young vehicle owners sometimes have the car insured by, for example, one of their parents. Even in this case, the insurer can still see who the registered owner is.

Policyholder's Interest

If the policyholder is not the registered owner or the actual owner of the car, they may feel less responsible for it. This increases the risk that the premium will not be paid or that the car will be damaged. Insurers will therefore be reluctant to issue a car insurance policy in a name other than that of the owner.
