Damage to a car caused by my own fault: Is this covered by insurance?
Did you cause damage to your car through your own fault? If so, there’s a chance you’re covered for it. However, this doesn’t apply to every type of auto insurance, so be sure to carefully check your coverage.
Have you only purchased auto insurance with third-party liability coverage? In that case, damage to your own car caused by your own fault is never covered by the insurance. The insurer will therefore not pay out. Even with limited comprehensive coverage, damage to your own car caused by your own fault is not covered.
The only coverage you can choose to be reimbursed for damage to your car caused by your own fault is comprehensive insurance. This is the only type of insurance that covers all damages, with the exception of cases excluded by law (such as driving under the influence).
Damage Caused by Your Own Fault: File a Claim or Pay Out of Pocket?
When you cause damage, you should always weigh whether filing a claim is worth the higher premium. It may be that the damage is so minor that it will actually cost you more to file a claim. Therefore, always check carefully how many claim-free years you have and whether your premium will increase if you file a claim. Depending on the amount of your deductible and the premium increase, you can decide whether to file a claim. Is the damage only 200 euros? Then it’s probably more cost-effective to pay the costs yourself.
It’s a good idea to file a claim if the amount exceeds your deductible and the resulting premium increase. If you won’t face a premium increase because you’ve built up so many claim-free years, then go ahead and file the claim.
Before you decide whether to file a claim, always contact your insurer. They can provide a calculation to help you make your decision. This will give you a clear overview of which option is most advantageous for you.
Damage Caused by Your Own Fault: Should You Get Comprehensive Coverage or Not?
Comprehensive auto insurance is worth considering in some cases. When purchasing a car less than 6 years old, people often choose to get comprehensive auto insurance. If you rely heavily on your car, comprehensive auto insurance may also be a wise choice. Keep in mind that comprehensive auto insurance is significantly more expensive than other types of insurance. Therefore, think carefully about whether you can afford it now and in the future.
Is the car more than 6 years old, and do you drive it infrequently, or has the car lost much of its value? If so, it might be better to choose a less expensive car insurance policy.
What does the insurance cover in the event of damage caused by my own fault?
What your insurer will cover in the event of damage caused by your own fault depends on the coverage provided by your auto insurance policy. Below, we’ll briefly explain the three types of coverage:
WA
WA stands for “Wettelijke Aansprakelijkheid” (Civil Liability). This means that under this coverage, the insurer will only compensate for liability claims. A liability claim is damage you cause to another person with your car. Damage to your own car caused by your own fault is not covered under WA coverage.
Limited Comprehensive Coverage
Limited comprehensive auto insurance supplements the legally required liability coverage. With this coverage, you’re insured against damage beyond your control, such as fire, storms, joyriding, and theft. Do you have limited comprehensive coverage? If so, damage caused by your own fault will unfortunately not be covered by the insurer.
All-Risk
Comprehensive coverage is the most extensive type of auto insurance coverage. It also covers so-called “single-vehicle accidents,” such as when you hit a pole or misjudge your parking spot. Filing a claim will, however, affect your premium discount and your no-claims years. Therefore, always carefully consider whether it makes sense to file a claim or if you might be better off paying for the repair yourself.
