How can I look up the chassis number?

The chassis number or vehicle identification number is a unique code that every vehicle must have.

All about the chassis number of a car

The chassis number is also known as the frame number or vehicle identification number (VIN). This is a unique code that every vehicle must have. The chassis number can be used to distinguish between all different vehicles.

The number is engraved on the car's chassis/frame, hence the name. You can also look up the chassis number in different ways. In this article, we'll tell you how to look up your car's chassis number.

Look up the chassis number on the car

The chassis number is always engraved on the chassis/frame of the car. The exact spot where the chassis number is engraved can differ from car to car, but it is almost always located in places and parts that are difficult to replace or modify. Criminals sometimes clone the chassis number in order to place it on a stolen car. This is also called refitting a car. If the chassis number on the frame and on the registration certificate do not match, it may be a stolen vehicle. The chassis number can also often be found on the dashboard of the car, on the driver's side.

Looking up chassis number on the registration certificate

The chassis number is not only found in the car itself, but is also always found on the car's registration certificate. This is because the chassis number is linked to the license plate of your car. It is therefore also forbidden to simply mount a different chassis number on the vehicle without informing the RDW.

The vehicle identification number allows a mechanic to see, among other things, exactly when the car was made and what parts were used. This is especially easy for ordering new parts for a repair. You'll find the chassis number on the back of your registration card, at the very top.

To purchase car insurance, you need your car's report code. The report code consists of the last four digits of the chassis number. An insurer needs the report code to register the car with the National Office for Road Transport (RDW). Without a report code you cannot insure your car.
