Valuables insurance with contents insurance
With contents insurance, you insure the things in your home. But what if you own antiques or other special valuables? Then take out a valuables insurance as well. This way you protect your expensive belongings against loss, theft or damage.
Calculate your premiumValuables insurance coverage
You can co-insure your valuables with home contents insurance. However, coverage is limited and not all damage will be reimbursed. With an additional valuables insurance on top of your household contents insurance you are assured of extensive coverage for your expensive belongings. The coverage of the valuables insurance varies per insurer. Therefore, always check the conditions on your policy carefully.
Comprehensive coverage
With valuables insurance, you are insured against indoors, but usually outdoors as well:
- loss
- theft
- damage
- destruction
Please note that this must not involve any fault of your own. A maximum amount also applies
Not covered with valuables insurance
With valuables insurance, insurers use a number of exclusions, such as:
inherent defect damage
intentional damage
rental damage
damage during wear and tear
damage caused by cleaning, processing or repair
damage caused, for example, by a flood, acts of war, earthquake or nuclear reaction
theft from an unlocked room without traces of breaking and entering
These are valuables for insurance purposes
By valuables we mean:
antiques, such as an 1800s porcelain vase
art, such as a painting by Rembrandt
expensive collections, such as ancient coins
expensive jewelry, such as a Rolex
musical instruments, such as a piano
photographic or film equipment
Maximum coverage valuables
Standard insurance policies such as contents insurance have maximum coverage. For example, up to €5,000 for jewelry. Do you own expensive watches? Then standard insurance does not provide enough coverage.
With valuables insurance, there is a high maximum amount of coverage. You adjust this amount with most insurers according to your wishes when you take out your insurance. Based on that, your premium is determined.
Impact of underinsurance
Underinsurance means that the insured value of an object is lower than its actual value. The value of the object is then only partially covered. Imagine your household contents are insured for €70,000, but the actual value is €80,000.
For a €10,000 claim after a kitchen fire, you will then only be reimbursed €8,750 due to underinsurance, as 12.5% is not covered.
Double insured?
Valuables are partially covered by contents insurance. In case of damage, such as fire, there may therefore be a concurrence of insurances. The damage is then covered by both your contents insurance and your valuables insurance. In that situation, the specific insurance takes precedence over the general one. So the damage is then compensated by your valuables insurance.
Prevention measures
If you have valuables insurance, the insurer expects you to take measures yourself to prevent damage or theft. This means, for example, that you store jewelry or other expensive items safely. Such as in a certified safe. So don't just leave your valuables lying around or unattended in public places.
The insurer may also ask for additional security, such as an alarm system in your home. Keep your appointments and make sure you are well prepared. That way you can avoid problems.
Get valuables insurance
When buying valuables insurance, you need to know the value of your valuables. To do so, have a proper and complete appraisal report. Many insurers appraise valuables themselves based on purchase receipts and statements from jewelers. You can also hire a licensed appraiser yourself.
Check regularly that the valuables listed on your policy are still correct. This way you avoid nasty surprises in case of damage or theft and you are always optimally insured.

Frequently asked questions about valuables insurance
What is the difference between contents insurance and valuables insurance?
By default, contents insurance covers your belongings in your home against damage such as fire or theft. But for expensive and special objects such as jewelry, art or antiques, coverage is often limited. A valuables insurance offers extra protection for these valuable possessions, often also outside the home. This way you avoid being stuck with high costs in case of damage or loss.
Am I also insured outside the home with valuables insurance?
Yes, in most cases, with valuables insurance you are also insured against loss, theft or damage outside the home. This applies, for example, if you take an expensive laptop to a café or wear jewelry while traveling. Always check the policy terms and conditions, though, as coverage may vary from one insurer to another.
When is valuables insurance necessary in addition to my household insurance?
Valuables insurance is necessary if you have valuable possessions that are not fully covered by your contents insurance. Think of jewelry, antiques or art that are worth more than the standard maximum in your policy. With separate valuables insurance, you avoid being underinsured in the event of damage or loss.
Can I be double insured for valuables?
Yes, there may be double coverage if both your contents insurance and your valuables insurance cover damage. In that case, the specific insurance (the valuables insurance) takes precedence over the general coverage of the contents insurance. The damage is then usually handled entirely through the valuables insurance.
