When is someone considered a defaulter by an insurer?

It may happen that you completely forget to pay the insurance premium or it does not happen on time. Fortunately, you will not immediately receive a CIS registration. However, when it happens more often or a large payment arrears occurs, you will be seen as a defaulter. This can have major consequences. Below is explained when someone is a defaulter and what the exact consequences are with regard to the insurance.

When is there a non-payment?

Many insurers do not immediately make a big issue of not paying the premium on time. Therefore, they do not always immediately speak of non-payment. Perhaps there has just been a major financial setback this month and there is a good reason. In the first instance, a warning will be issued after which the premium can still be paid. You are only considered a defaulter if the premium is still not paid after several warnings. The definition of a defaulter is therefore: someone who uses a certain service or product without paying.

Consequences of non-payment in relation to insurance

If you have completely forgotten to pay the insurance premium, the insurer will first send you a reminder. There is no problem if this reminder is paid on time. However, if the payment is not made after more than 30 days, insurers may suspend the coverage, for example in the case of car insurance. The car insurance will be suspended and your license plate will be cancelled at the RDW, which means that the car is no longer insured. You are not allowed to drive the car anymore. A notification is made of this, which can be viewed in the system by all the insurers.

The insurer can also cancel the insurance. This can happen if, for example, you have not paid after a period of more than 50 days. This means that the insurance will be terminated. You do not have to pay any more premiums, but are also immediately uninsured. If there are any arrears in payment, they must still be paid after the cancellation.

In case of a cancelled insurance policy, a registration as defaulter in the CIS database follows. This database is maintained by the CIS Foundation. All information that could have major consequences for insurance companies is recorded here. So also when an insurance has been cancelled as a result of non-payment. This data is visible to all affiliated insurers and they can consult the database at any time for information about customers.

Before accepting an insurance application, the company always checks whether the applicant has a CIS registration. Such a registration always comes up and can cause difficulties with an insurance application. The chance is therefore high that your application will not be accepted if there is a CIS registration. This is because you represent too great a risk for the insurance company.

How long does a registration of non-payment remain?

On average, a CIS registration as defaulter remains in place for 3 to 5 years. How long exactly differs per situation and depends on the extent of the problem. During the entire registration period, this is visible to all insurers at all times. Most likely a regular company will not insure you, but with De Vereende you will still succeed. The company was specifically founded for insuring risks and also when there is a registration in the database of CIS you will be able to take out insurance here. Almost every application is accepted and the acceptance policy is very broad. When the registration as defaulter disappears again, you can take out insurance again with an ordinary company.
