Road tax also for oldtimers

One of the proposals of the new cabinet is that road tax should also be paid for old-timers.

The old-timer owners are furious with the cabinet. This proposal will make their hobby much more expensive. Because in addition to old-timer insurance, they will also have to pay road tax for their old-timer(s). Old-timer lovers are afraid that they will have to sell their car(s) because of the high costs. For people with several cars, the blow comes hard. The costs for someone with, for example, 5 old-timers can amount to approximately € 3000.

Why road tax for oldtimers

More and more classic cars are driving on the roads of the Netherlands. Old diesel cars, for example, are still doing fine, but they cause a lot of environmental pollution. According to Willem Posthumus Meyjes (secretary) of the 'Federatie Historische Automobiel- en motorfietsclub', all old-timer owners are being lumped together by this proposal and this would not make sense.

Solution

A solution to reduce costs is to suspend the registration of your old-timer(s). This means that you do not have to pay road tax for the old-timer. This means, however, that it is not allowed to drive with the classics. This is a big disappointment for the classic car lovers, who of course want to drive in their proud possession.
