Are you allowed to ride your motorcycle past the traffic jam?
Crossing the distance from your home to work by motorcycle gives less trouble from a traffic jam. You can simply pass between the stationary cars, but is that allowed? Will your motorcycle insurance cover you if you do cause damage?
Motorcycles allow you to drive between traffic jams, but there are strict conditions. This is because it is not without danger. This is because the drivers of stationary cars do not assume that they still have to take passersby into account. What are the rules?
Rules for driving between traffic jams
Legally it is allowed, but there are rules of conduct you must follow. One important one is that the difference in speed should not exceed 10 kilometers per hour. If the road consists of three or more lanes, choose to drive between the leftmost lanes.
What is the danger of driving between traffic jams?
In traffic jams, it can make a difference which lane you drive in. One lane may flow faster than another, so passenger car drivers often tend to switch lanes. This is very dangerous when combined with motorcyclists driving between cars. Stay alert to this. Always keep this in mind.
Tips for driving past congestion:
- Don't expect big time savings and resign yourself to the fact that other traffic is not set up for passing motorcycles;
- Keep adequate distance with motorcycles ahead that are similarly passing between cars. Stay two car lengths away from the car in front;
- Also, obey the traffic rules. Just to avoid irritation to those who do get stuck;
- Do not drive on the emergency lane alongside the traffic jam. That's just not allowed;
- Look ahead carefully to notice dangerous situations early;
- Watch for protruding wing mirrors, especially on cars with a caravan.
Does motorcycle insurance provide coverage if things do go wrong?
Driving between cars is just allowed, so if things do go wrong, you can call in the motorcycle insurance. Even with an offense, the insurer still cannot get out from under paying out for damages. Possibly, in the case of a very serious offense or an intentionally caused damage, the insurer can get out from under its duty. But that will not play out anytime soon.
