Riding a quad bike - know what you are doing
During the summer months, many Dutch people abroad get involved in a traffic accident with a quad bike. In the summer holiday resorts, they are indeed rented out cheaply, but you have to know how to handle these motor vehicles.
Every year during the summer vacations, several Dutch people are involved in serious traffic accidents involving a quad bike. The motor vehicle is also becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. This is evident from the number of accidents in our country.
The power of a quad is underestimated
On a quad bike, you have a greater sense of safety compared to a motorcycle. Inexperienced riders on these vehicles must learn the power and speed well before riding them for long stretches. People with a driver's license also think they can control a quad bike, but it is not comparable to driving a car. This is evidenced by accident statistics. Between 2009 and 2013, 540 quad drivers ended up in the emergency room each year. Characteristically, 13% of them were accidents involving stationary objects.
With a quad bike on public roads?
Five different types can be distinguished. First, you have the non-approved one for public roads. This can be used, for example, for driving on private property. In addition, you have four types that are allowed on public roads. The requirements differ for each type. There is special quad insurance for these quads. The other four types fall under the following headings:
- Approved as a moped
- Approved as three-wheeled motor vehicle
- The heavier variant can be used as a passenger car
- The heavier version as a company car
The legal requirements depend on which type of motor vehicle the quad is equated with.

You can increase road safety by observing the following tips.
Tip #1: Always wear a helmet. Even if it's not mandatory.
Tip #2: Don't go sport riding right away. Get well acquainted with the quad bike first.
