Do you own a car in the Netherlands? Then it's mandatory to have car insurance. With our handy online tool you can easily compare a wide range of car insurance premiums from different insurance companies. That way you never pay more than necessary for your car insurance.
Insuring your car only takes a few minutes and, in most cases, you will receive temporary cover immediately so your car is insured as soon as possible, even during the weekend.
Car insurance costs
The cost of car insurance in the Netherlands is based on a number of factors, including:
- The driver's age
- Place of residence
- Vehicle value
- The number of claim-free years
- Any additional accessories you've added to the car
The costs of car insurance vary from insurer to insurer. The average car insurance costs about €40 per month, but the insurance premium is different for everyone. You may pay as little as €25 or as much as €90 per month. It all depends on the factors above.
Always carefully read the policy details and check the excess amount of the insurance options. It may be worth it to pay a bit more per month to have a cover that fits you perfectly.

WA, WA+ Limited Comprehensive, or All-Risk? Choosing the right car insurance
The most central and important part of car insurance is the WA cover (third party liability). It is mandatory in the Netherlands to have car insurance with at least a WA cover. This cover provides compensation for damage that you cause with your car to other people and their property.
The repair or compensation costs after an incident can be very high, especially if the other person becomes disabled or unable to work. A WA cover is the minimum cover and doesn't compensate for anything other than damage done to others.
If you need a more complete insurance you can choose to expand your cover to WA + Limited Casco (third party liability + limited cover) or All-risk (full cover, also known as WA Casco). All-risk is the most comprehensive cover of the three. Which car insurance is best for you and your car depends on several factors, such as the age and value of your car.
We pick out the fine print for you

Choosing the right car insurance cover
Various factors play a role in choosing an insurance cover. For example, the age and current market value of the car, but also your claim-free years.
If you have driven claim-free for several years, you can often choose the most comprehensive insurance for a fairly low premium. If you have very few or even negative claim-free years, however, your insurance could get quite expensive. In the case of negative claim-free years, some insurers may refuse to insure you. We offer specialised insurance for cases like this.
When choosing a cover, you should make a well-informed choice. The insurance premium should be proportionate to the current market value of the car. For example, for a 12 year old car, it often does not make sense to choose the most comprehensive car insurance policy. The yearly premium is often more than the value of the car in cases like that.
Car insurance requirements in the Netherlands
If you want to get car insurance in the Netherlands, there are a few requirements. First of all, you have to live in the Netherlands permanently. If you only live in the Netherlands for a couple of weeks a year, you do not qualify for Dutch car insurance. Second, you must have a European (EU) or EFTA driving license. Lastly, your car has to have a Dutch license plate.
If you've been living in the Netherlands for a while, you should use a Dutch driving license to get car insurance. Foreign driving licenses are only valid for a limited time once you've become a resident of the Netherlands.

Avoid unexpected costs - choose the right additional cover
Different insurers offer different optional covers, but most offer the following:
Legal expenses cover
Did you get into an accident and you need to recover damages? This cover helps you with that.
If you've chosen an All-risk insurance, your own insurer will cover any damage to your vehicle. This cover is unnecessary in that case. However, if you only have WA cover, this can be a useful addition. This cover applies when you get into an accident in the Netherlands, but also works abroad.
Motor legal protection cover
This additional cover offers assistance in the case of a legal dispute, or when you need to recover damages from the person who caused an accident you were involved in. This cover also applies if you get into a dispute with a car dealer or a garage.
This cover applies both within the Netherlands and abroad, as long as it concerns the car that has been insured with the policy the additional cover is attached to. Please keep in mind that specific conditions may apply before this cover can be used.
Breakdown cover
In case of a car breakdown, this cover can be invaluable. It covers most costs associated with roadside assistance, such as (emergency) repairs or alternative transport. This cover comes in three types:
- Netherlands: Cover in case of a breakdown within the Netherlands
- Europe: Cover in case of a breakdown within Europe
- Europe with trailer: Cover in case of a breakdown with a vehicle with a trailer attached, within Europe
Make sure that you aren't insured twice for breakdown, a lot of new cars automatically come with a similar service, and you may also be a member of 'de Wegenwacht' already.
Personal accident cover
You may not want to think about it, but serious accidents can happen. This cover helps with the costs incurred when the driver or a passenger faces permanent disability or death, caused by an accident.
The occupant must be inside the vehicle when the accident occurs for this cover to be applicable. Inside the car also includes getting in or out of the car and carrying out emergency roadside repairs.
The cover insures a specific amount, set in advance when you apply for it. Several amounts are available to choose from. Material damage is not covered with this insurance. If you want to insure this, please consider the 'occupant injury and property cover'.
Occupant injury and property cover
Material damage to the driver or passengers of the car as the result of an accident is insured with this cover. This cover extends to damage to property (clothing, luggage, etc.), loss of income, household assistance, transport costs, medical costs, non-material damages and funeral expenses.
The maximum insured amount per occurrence is usually around €1 million. If you wish to insure permanent disability or death, please refer to the personal accident cover.
Some insurers also offer additional cover for accessories, if those accessories exceed a certain value.
Additional cover
If you want extra security, it's worth considering additional cover for your car insurance.
