Is it possible to transfer a car on Saturday?

When you sell a vehicle, you will receive a certificate of release from liability. With this document, you can prove that the licence plate of a sold vehicle is no longer in your name. As long as the licence plate has not been transferred to a new owner, you remain responsible for the road tax, car insurance, MOT and any fines. What do you need to transfer the license plate and is it also possible to transfer a car on a Saturday?

What do I need to transfer a car?

You can have your car's registration number transferred at various post offices. On the PostNL website you can see where this is possible. This is because not every post office is allowed to perform a licence plate registration. For the transfer, you need to bring the following items:

Car registration on Saturday or Sunday is it possible?

Transferring a car on Saturdays is just possible these days. Post offices are also open on Saturdays. However, if you want to get the license plate registered on Sunday, it is a good idea to check in advance if the nearest post office is also open on Sunday.

Furthermore, many car dealers themselves have the option to transfer the registration number to another person's name.

Registering a car on Saturday: until what time?

Nowadays, many PostNL offices have a number plate counter where you can register a car. This is handy, because they are often located in several places, so there is a good chance that there is one near you. If you have your car registered at a PostNL location, you are of course bound by the location's opening hours. Fortunately, these locations have broad opening hours and are often open all day on Saturdays as well. Some locations are even open until 9 or 10 in the evening. On the PostNL website, you can find out at which registration desk in your area you can transfer your car on Saturday and at what time they are open.

What is a registration desk?

The license plate counter is a place where individuals and businesses can have their vehicles registered and/or apply for, extend or lift a suspension.
At present, the license plate counters are the branches of PostNL and (car) companies affiliated with the Foundation License Plate Counter. More organizations may be added in the future.
Furthermore, the RDW counters are also considered license plate counters. These can be found in the RDW inspection stations and at the RDW locations in Den Bosch, Veendam and Zoetermeer.

Your car sold what should I end now?

If you have sold your car, you can use the indemnification certificate to prove that the car is no longer registered in your name. The insurance obligation lies with the new owner. You can now terminate or suspend your car insurance. This depends on whether or not you plan to buy another car in the near future.

If you plan to buy another car soon, you can choose to temporarily suspend the car insurance. This will freeze the insurance from the date of sale. You will then no longer pay any premium and the premium you have already paid will remain in the policy. When you register another car, the insurance will become active again.

If you do not intend to buy another car in the near future, you can terminate your car insurance. The premium paid in excess will then be refunded by the insurer.
