On a beautiful, sunny day, it is great to be on the water. In recent years, boating has become increasingly popular among recreational sailors, and in summer it can therefore sometimes be quite busy on Dutch waters. Particularly in the locks, it gets very busy, which sometimes causes problems with the locks. Locking means that a ship moves through a lock between two canal sides with different water levels. As a novice boater, navigating through a lock can sometimes be quite challenging. A number of locks also have terraces along the quay, so you have spectators. Of course, you would prefer to avoid making mistakes in a lock. Therefore, in this article we have listed the 5 most common mistakes in a lock.

Mistake 1: Not knowing the sailing rules

On the water, as in traffic, rules apply. Sailing rules are established in a number of regulations. These are the Barge Police Regulations (BPR) and the Rhine Police Regulations (RPR). Are you going out on the water? Then it is wise to read these regulations carefully first. Sailing regulations also apply to passing through locks. Moreover, passing through locks requires extra attention because ships have to maneuver within a limited space. If you are well aware of the sailing rules regarding passing through locks, you are also less likely to make mistakes.

Mistake 2: Not listening to the lock master's instructions

On busy days, there is often a lock master (also called a lock keeper or steward) at a lock. A lock master operates the lock and determines how to lock. They also indicate the correct position in the lock chamber and assist boaters in docking. The lock master may give a skipper traffic instructions if necessary. In that case, the skipper is obliged to listen to these traffic instructions. A lock master has the knowledge and experience to properly lock boats through a lock. Therefore, always listen carefully to the directions you are given.

Mistake 3: Tightening the lines too tightly

Another common mistake in a lock is tying the lines too tightly. This causes you to "hang" with your boat. Secure the boat fore and aft, but don't tighten the lines too much. This way the boat can sail with you as the water drops or rises.

Mistake 4: Entering or leaving the lock too quickly

A novice driver sometimes tends to enter or exit a lock too quickly. There is also a speed limit in a lock. Moreover, space in a lock is limited and you sail there with several vessels. Therefore, pay close attention to speed when entering or leaving a lock. Reduce speed as you approach the lock. Travel at low speed as far forward as possible (or to the spot assigned to you by the lock master) and keep in line with the boat in front of you.

Mistake 5: Not paying attention to road signs and lights

You will also encounter all kinds of traffic signs at locks in the form of signs and lights. If a red light is on at the lock, entering and leaving the lock is prohibited. If the lights are red/green, it is a sign that the lock will open soon. You can then prepare yourself to enter the lock as soon as it is permitted.
