Weekend favored by burglars

The latest Home Burglaries Risk Monitor from the Insurers' Association shows that insurers receive the most claims following burglaries on Fridays and Saturdays.

The number of burglary claims averages 15 percent higher on Fridays and Saturdays than on other days. The average number of burglary claims is 166 per day.
In 2017, the total number of claims decreased by 5% compared to 2016. This puts the total number of 2017 claims at the same level as 2015.
The Center for Insurance Statistics (CVS) of the Dutch Association of Insurers recorded 60,700 claims in 2017 on contents insurance and building insurance.

On average, insurers receive seven burglary claims per hour. As a result, the commitment of police and municipalities to prevention, enforcement and detection remains critical.

The Christmas season, year after year, remains as popular as ever. Many people are with family or friends during the holidays, and burglars capitalize on this. Be well prepared and make it as difficult as possible for burglars. That way, after a pleasant time with friends or family, you won't have any unpleasant surprises when you get home. If necessary, you can ask your neighbors to pay extra attention when you are not home.

There was also a large spike in burglaries during New Year's Eve.

Burglary claims by county

The number of burglary claims by province decreased in 2017, across all provinces. The province of Groningen saw the largest decrease. The provinces where the most burglary claims came from were Flevoland and Limburg. The municipalities with the most burglary claims are Almere, Breda and Eindhoven.

Home burglary prevention

The Department of Justice and Security provides some tips to prevent a residential burglary.
Below, we have listed some tips for you to prevent the chances of a home burglary.

• Always close doors and windows and lock the door. Even if you only leave the house for a short time.
• Leave a lamp on at night to make it look like someone is home.
• Don't put valuable items in plain sight.
• Don't keep too much cash in the house.
• Join a neighborhood app.
• Sign up for Burgernet.

In addition to the above measures, it is important to properly secure your home. Consider -an anti-intrusion strip at your front and back door. This prevents a crowbar or screwdriver from being inserted between the door and the frame. -Provide good outdoor lighting with a motion sensor, for example. -Make it easy to see who is at the door by using a door spy, for example. -Make sure you have good contents insurance.
