Carry damage-free years moped to car insurance
If you do not drive your motor vehicle damage-free, insurers reward you with a discount on your insurance premium. The longer you drive claim-free, the higher the premium discount. Each year that you do not claim, you build up one claim-free year. The discount can be up to 75% and with some insurers even up to 80%. This saves you a lot of money on insurance. That is why people sometimes choose not to claim a small damage with the insurer, but pay for it themselves. This way they keep their claim-free years and do not fall back on the bonus malus ladder. Unfortunately, most car insurance companies do not do anything with the claim-free years accumulated with moped insurance. On this page, we explain why.
Damage-free years of a moped in Roy-data
Damage-free years you accrue with car insurance are registered in Roy-data. Roy-data is the central database of the EPS Foundation (Efficient Processes Claims Insurers). After terminating your car insurance, the insurer registers your accrued claim-free years in Roy-data. When you subsequently take out a new car insurance policy, your new insurer will consult the Roy-data database to see how many claim-free years you have. However, claim-free years of a moped are not included in the Roy-data system. As a result, an old-fashioned paper statement of cancellation must still be used to prove your claim-free years.
Why do the claim-free years with my moped not count?
Insurers unfortunately feel that the claim-free years you have accumulated with your moped have little value for car insurance. One argument is that the driving experience you gain with the moped is irrelevant to driving a car. Experience with moped driving does not reduce the likelihood of an accident with the car. Therefore, they do not count the claim-free years you accrue with your moped when calculating the car premium.
Moving from a moped to a car does not mean that you will never ride a moped again. If you want to reinsure a moped in your name, those claim-free years may still come in handy. Be careful, though, because claim-free years do not remain valid indefinitely. After a certain number of years, they expire. This is usually 3 years, but can exceptionally be 2 or even 5 years. So always check this before taking out moped insurance again.
Can you take over claim-free years upon the death of your partner?
Claim-free years can be taken over from partners in a few situations since Jan. 1, 2022, such as death and divorce. If you share a moped with your partner, the moped insurance is in the name of either of them. Only the person in whose name the moped insurance is carried accrues claim-free years.
When a partner dies, it is possible to take over the claim-free years of the deceased. Conditions are that you are registered at the same address as your partner and that you have a valid driver's license. Many insurers were accommodating before this new legislation, but now there is a clear policy that all insurers must adhere to.
Can I take over the claim-free allowance from my ex-partner?
Yes, in the case of divorce, it is possible to take over claim-free years from your ex-partner. The claim-free years are then divided between the two ex-partners. The partner who has accumulated the claim-free years determines the distribution key. He or she then submits a waiver statement to the insurer waiving the claim-free years. Claim-free years that are ceded to an ex-partner can no longer be used for one's own insurance, because claim-free years cannot be copied, only transferred.
Can lease drivers take over claim-free years after lease period?
If you lease a moped, the moped and the moped insurance are in the name of the leasing company. Because the moped insurance is not in your name, you do not build up any claim-free years. If you buy your own moped after the lease period, you also have to take out your own moped insurance. Therefore, you can request a lease statement from the leasing company. Before Jan. 1, 2022, insurers still took a variable approach to this. Some insurers only gave a premium discount, but you lost it when switching insurers.
Damage-free years that you have accumulated with a foreign moped insurance can be taken over with a written statement from the insurer in the country concerned. You can then submit this to your Dutch moped insurer.
