Home Moped insurance Taking over damage free years

How does the transfer of claim-free years for moped insurance work?

In some cases, it is possible to take over someone else's claim-free years. This is advantageous because it will reduce the premium for moped insurance for you. For every year that you do not claim any damage with your moped insurer, you get one claim-free year. The more claim-free years you build up, the more premium discount you get. The maximum discount can be as much as 80% on the basic premium. However, taking over claim-free years cannot be done just like that. In this article on Alpina.nl we explain in which situations you can take over claim-free years.

Are schade free years of a moped not included in Roy data?

Claim-free years that you build up with an auto insurance policy are registered in Roy-data. Roy-data is the central database of Stichting EPS (Efficient Processes Schadeverzekeraars). When your car insurance policy is terminated, the insurer records your accrued claim-free years in Roy-data. If you then take out a new car insurance, your new insurer will consult the Roy-data database to see how many claim-free years you have. Claim-free years of a moped or scooter however are not included in the Roy-data system. Therefore you still have to use an old-fashioned paper statement to show your claim-free years.

Can you take over claim-free years when your partner dies?

Taking over claim-free years is only possible in a number of situations. One of these is the death of a partner. If you share a moped with your partner, the moped insurance is in the name of one of them. Only the person in whose name the moped insurance is held, builds up claim-free years. When the partner dies, the other person would theoretically be left without claim-free years. Without claim-free years, you will get less premium discount, which makes a moped insurance a lot more expensive.

Since 1 January 2022 it has been determined that upon the death of a partner it is possible to take over the claim-free years of the deceased. Conditions are that you are registered at the same address as your partner and that you are in possession of a valid driving licence. Many insurers were already lenient before this new legislation, but from now on there is an unambiguous policy which all insurers must comply with.

Can I take over the claim-free allowance from my ex-partner?

Yes, in case of divorce it is possible to take over claim-free years from your ex-partner. The claim-free years are then divided between the two ex-partners. The partner who has accumulated the claim-free years, determines the distribution key. Then he/she submits a waiver statement to the insurer in which the claim-free years are relinquished. Claim-free years that are surrendered to an ex-partner cannot be used for one's own insurance, because claim-free years cannot be copied, only transferred.

Can lease drivers take over claim-free years after lease period?

If you lease a moped, the moped and the moped insurance are in the name of the leasing company. Because the moped insurance is not in your name, you do not build up any claim-free years. If you buy a moped yourself after the lease period, you must also take out moped insurance yourself. Therefore, you can request a lease statement from the leasing company. Before 1 January 2022, insurers were still taking different approaches to this. Some insurers only gave a premium discount, but this was lost when you switched to another insurer.

Claim-free years that you have built up with a foreign moped insurance can be taken over with a written statement from the insurer in the country concerned. You can then submit this to your Dutch moped insurer.
