What does car insurance cost per month?
You are obliged to insure your car at least against third-party liability. WA stands for third-party liability and only provides cover for liability damage. This concerns damages that you cause to others. Damage to your own car is not covered by this policy and you have to pay for it yourself. Third Party Insurance offers the least coverage and is therefore the cheapest of the three.
The cost of car insurance is made up of the following components:
- The age of the driver
- Your city
- The weight of the car
- The selected coverage
- The number of claim-free years you have accumulated
- The premium for any additional cover
- Policy costs for drawing up the policy and registering your car with the RDW
- Administration fee (prolongation fee)
- 21% insurance tax
When choosing the coverage, you have three options: Third Party, Limited Comprehensive or All Risk. There are big price differences between these three types of coverage. The more broadly insured you are, the more you will pay per month for your car insurance. Below we explain the difference in costs between the three types of coverage.
What is the average cost of car insurance per month?
There are big differences in the average costs per month for car insurance. On average, car insurance costs about €75 per month, but you may pay €90 per month while your neighbour pays €65 for the same insurance. This is because the premium is different for everyone. Insurers determine the amount of the premium by looking at your personal situation and individual characteristics. They determine how big the risk is that they run and base the monthly premium on that.
WA + limited casco
The WA + limited hull is a supplement to the compulsory WA insurance. With this, not only damage that you cause to others is compensated for, but also damage caused by fire, hail, storm, lightning, fire, explosion, window breakage, theft, attempted theft and damage caused by collision with stray animals.
The price difference between a WA car insurance and a WA + limited hull insurance is relatively small. For WA + limited hull you often pay between 3 and 15 euros more premium per month, but then you are much more extensively insured. The repair costs can mount up considerably when a car is damaged. By insuring yourself more extensively, you know for sure that you will not end up with a huge bill. The real difference in price between the coverages, however, is only noticeable with an all-risk insurance.
Can I choose all-risk coverage?
Are you opting for al risk cover? Then you know for sure that you are always well insured. With an all risk car insurance, the damage to your own car is always compensated, even when it is your own fault. Vandalism damage is also insured.
With all-risk insurance, you are most comprehensively insured, which is why this coverage costs the most per month. On average, all-risk insurance is twice as expensive as third-party limited liability. Average, because of course this is not true in every situation. The monthly cost of the car premium is based on more than just the coverage. Therefore, always compare different providers to find the cheapest car insurance with the best coverage.

How much does car insurance cost for a novice driver?
The cost of car insurance for a novice driver is higher than for an older driver. There are several reasons for this. The amount of the premium is partly determined by the number of years without claims that a driver has built up. The more claim-free years someone has, the higher the bonus malus discount. Therefore the premium will be a lot lower than for someone who still has to build up claim-free years.
What does car insurance cost for an 18 year old?
With most insurers, young people under the age of 24 pay more premium. This is partly because they have not yet accumulated any claim-free years but also partly because they do not yet have as much driving experience. As a result, they are proportionally more likely to be involved in a claim than people with more driving experience. The cost of car insurance for an 18-year-old is therefore often higher than for someone aged 40.
