What does no claim accrual mean?

When taking out a car insurance policy, you will have to deal with a possible no-claim discount. What does no-claim discount mean and how do you build it up? When you have car insurance in your name and you do not claim any damages, you are rewarded for your driving. We call this no claim. The more claim-free years you have, the more no claim you build up. This means you get a discount on your premium. How much discount you get depends on your insurer.

When do you build up no-claims?

You accrue no-claims when you do not claim any damages from your car insurance company. Having or not having claim-free years makes a big difference on the premium of your car insurance. It is important to note that the car insurance policy must be in your own name when the car is in your possession. For each insurance year that you do not claim any damage, you move up the so-called bonus-malus ladder. The more claim-free years, the higher your no-claim discount. If you do make a claim and claim it from your insurer, you will go down the no-claims ladder again. The no-claim discount will decrease and you will then start paying more for your car insurance again. How much no-claim discount you get is different for each insurer.

How much no claim do you build up per year?

For every year that you do not claim with your insurer, you get 1 claim-free year. This means that every year you receive 1 step extra no-claim discount. The higher you climb the bonus-malus ladder, the more no-claim discount you receive. However, when you do claim car damage, you also lose no-claim years. Losing them is faster than gaining them. For every claim you make, you lose 5 no-claim years. As a result, the premium for your car insurance can suddenly rise sharply. Not all claims will result in the loss of claim-free years and no claim discount. Damages that are insured in the WA limited casco are not at the expense of the claim-free years. Examples are windshield, fire, storm or hail damage and theft of your car. In case of damage caused by a collision or vandalism, the claim on the insurance will be at the expense of your claim-free years.

Is it possible to be able to accumulate a no claim for young people?

Young drivers up to age 24 pay significantly more for auto insurance. Insurers view young people up to age 24 as a high-risk group. Statistically, this high-risk group drives more claims. In addition, young people pay a higher premium because they have not yet been able to build up a no-claim. So they do not benefit from the no-claim discount. Taking out insurance in the name of one of the parents can be financially more attractive. However, there are also a number of disadvantages to insuring in the name of the parents. Moreover, as a young person, you do not build up a no-claim discount as long as you do not insure a car in your name. Despite the fact that a higher premium applies in the first few years, you do build up no claim discount for the future.

Accruing no claim as a second driver is possible?

In most cases, the license plate holder is also the regular driver of the car. Insurers assume that partners living at the same address also use each other's car. So in this case there is a second driver. But do you actually build up no claim as a second driver? In general, only the person who actually takes out the car insurance (policyholder) builds up claim-free years. Every year that the policyholder does not claim any damages with the insurer, he earns 1 claim-free year. The more claim-free years, the higher the no-claim discount. The second driver generally does not accrue any claim-free years. Even if both are known to the insurer as regular drivers. However, there are some insurers where you can build up no-claim discount as a second driver. Look for more information in your policy conditions or contact us for the possibilities.

Is it possible to be able to accumulate a no claim with your parents?

Young people who have not had car insurance before start with zero claim-free years and therefore have no no-claim discount. Is it possible for parents to build up no-claim discount for their child? As we indicated earlier, the no-claim discount is personal. As a parent you cannot build up no-claim years for your child. Many young people then try to get car insurance through their parents. This obviously saves in premium, but beware! When taking out car insurance, the insurer asks who the regular driver is. If the young person drives the car most of the time, but does not declare this, this is insurance fraud. The insurer may even decide to stop the insurance and you can risk a CIS registration.

Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022

Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
