Requesting a new registration code

Help, I've lost my registration card

If you are no longer in possession of the registration card, for example because you have lost it or it has been stolen, you must apply to the RDW for a new registration card. The RDW sends this together with a new registration code to the owner/applicant. The registration card then has the same registration number but a different document number. The costs for this are € 31.50.

New registration code through the RDW

The registration code consists of 2 parts that you have to put together yourself. The first part is on the registration certificate. You will receive this when the registration certificate is transferred to your name. The first part consists of the first 4 digits of the registration code. The second part is in the letter you receive from RDW, together with your registration card. This is sent by mail a few days after the registration. The second part consists of the last 5 digits of the code. So normally you have to wait before you have the full code. However, if you request a new registration code from RDW, you can download it immediately.

Requesting a new registration code in a hurry

If you are about to sell your car, you obviously want the new registration code as soon as possible. Fortunately, you do not have to do a 'rush notification' and pay extra, because you can download the new registration code immediately when you log in with your DigiD. To do this, follow the next steps:

1. Log in via the 'Instant download registration code' button on the RDW website. You can then log in with your DigiD.
2. Select the vehicle for which you wish to request a new code
3. Pay the fee via iDeal
4. You will then receive 2 emails from the RDW. The second e-mail contains the link to the new registration code
5. Download the new code and save it properly. The code will remain accessible through the link for 40 days
