Recovery of money after WhatsApp scam

WhatsApp scams are unfortunately becoming increasingly common. From transparent tricks to sophisticated methods using authentic profile photos, fraudsters know how to take different paths. But what if you have become a victim yourself? Find out how to reclaim your money after WhatsApp scams.

If you are a victim of WhatsApp fraud, there is a possible way out through the bank. The non-bank fraud procedure may come in handy. This procedure involves the bank writing to the scammer to return the stolen amount within three weeks. If the scammer ignores this warning, their name and known address can be handed over. It is important to note that certain rules apply, for example, to underage addresses.

Prior to initiating the banking procedure, you must file a police report. Consult your bank's website for detailed instructions on initiating the non-bank fraud procedure.

No response from the scammer?

Although the banking procedure does not guarantee that the scammer will refund the stolen amount, further steps are possible. In this situation, it is advisable to seek professional help. For example, consider legal expenses insurance, legal aid or a bailiff after WhatsApp scam.

For those who want to take steps regarding bailiffs, there are two specialized organizations: the National Association of Bailiffs (LAVG) and the Direct Liability Service Organization (SODA). These agencies contact the scammer without the need for direct legal action. If this is not effective, a lawsuit can always be filed, with costs usually recovered from the fraudster.

Success rate and requirements

The non-bankruptcy fraud procedure is not an empty promise. About half of the cases result in restitution of the lost amount. Importantly, both perpetrator and victim must have Dutch (IBAN) accounts. Foreign account holders cannot be sued by Dutch banks. Of course, proof of the scam is essential.

Preventing WhatsApp fraud

A common thread in WhatsApp fraud is the initiation of a conversation followed by a request for money. The profile picture may appear authentic, but the phone number may be different. A common excuse is that of a new number or using a friend's phone. Quickly transferring money for an "acute" problem is often an urgent request. Be careful and always call the person before offering financial help, preferably via video call. Ask questions you are sure a fraudster cannot answer correctly.

Unfortunately, despite precautions, you can still fall victim to WhatsApp fraud. If this happens, consider banking procedure, but be well prepared. Each scam situation requires a specific approach.
