What should you consider when choosing coverage?
Check the current market value of your car
The higher your car's current market value, the more comprehensive the coverage you'll often need
Pay attention to the car's age
Older cars are usually covered by more limited insurance policies
Assess the use and risk
Driving a lot increases the risk of damage
Take your financial situation into account
Those who want more peace of mind often opt for more comprehensive coverage
Which car insurance policy is right for your situation?
There are three types of coverage: third-party liability, limited comprehensive, and all-risk. You should choose the right car insurance based on a number of important factors. This will determine which coverage best suits your situation.
WA coverage
Third-party liability insurance (WA) is the minimum and mandatory coverage in the Netherlands. This insurance covers damage you cause to others with your car. Damage to your own car is not covered. Third-party liability insurance is generally suitable for cars that are about 10 years old or older.
Limited comprehensive coverage
This auto insurance policy offers more comprehensive coverage than third-party liability insurance. In addition to damage to others, limited comprehensive coverage also insures you against damage caused by fire, storms, theft, glass damage, and collisions with stray animals. It is generally suitable for cars that are approximately 6 to 10 years old.
All-Risk Coverage (Comprehensive Liability and Collision Coverage)
Comprehensive auto insurance is the most extensive type of auto insurance. It covers damage to your own car caused by your own fault, as well as vandalism. This coverage is typically suitable for cars less than 6 years old.

Second car insurance
Do you want to insure a second car? Your claim-free years normally apply only to your first car. With a second-car policy, you can often still get a discount on your second car insurance.
The options and terms vary by insurer. Wondering what this means for your situation with your current insurer? Please contact our customer service team; we’d be happy to help you figure it out.
Get Car Insurance in 5 Steps
Additional coverage for greater security
In addition to choosing the right coverage for your auto insurance, you can also compare and purchase various types of supplemental coverage. The supplemental coverage you choose will help determine what an insurer will reimburse in the event of a claim.
Occupant accidents
Passenger accident insurance provides coverage in the event of the death or permanent disability of the driver and/or passengers as a result of an accident.
The insurance policy typically pays out fixed amounts based on a benefit schedule. For example, a one-time payment of €7,500 in the event of death and a maximum benefit of €22,500 in the event of permanent disability.
Occupant damage
Passenger injury insurance provides coverage for the actual damages sustained by the driver and passengers as a result of an accident.
This includes both property damage and personal injury, such as medical expenses, loss of income, and damage to personal belongings. The insurance often provides coverage up to a maximum of €1,000,000.
We always recommend this additional coverage. Our experience shows that passenger insurance can make a big difference for those involved in the event of a serious accident.
Legal Aid
With legal expense insurance for motor vehicles, you are covered for legal assistance with issues related to the ownership and use of a car.
This includes assistance in recovering damages from a liable party or in discussions with a repair shop regarding repairs.
Roadside Assistance Netherlands
Roadside assistance after an accident is included as standard coverage. For assistance with vehicle breakdowns while on the road, you can purchase supplemental roadside assistance coverage.
With this insurance, you're guaranteed professional roadside assistance. You can choose from different coverage areas, such as the Netherlands or Europe.
Purchasing Car Insurance in Special Circumstances
Purchase Car Insurance for Business Use
Is the car registered in your company’s name, and does the company cover the costs? If so, you’ll usually need commercial auto insurance. For commercial use, the VAT is often deductible, which can result in a lower premium. We also offer suitable insurance solutions for taxis and courier services.
Get car insurance for an electric car
An electric car requires auto insurance that takes into account the vehicle’s specific features, such as the battery and charging cable. It is therefore especially important to tailor the coverage to the vehicle’s value and any specialized repairs that may be needed.
Get Car Insurance for a Used Car
Even with a used car, you should tailor your auto insurance to the vehicle’s age and current market value. It’s important to carefully consider which coverage is right for you; in many cases, liability or limited comprehensive coverage is sufficient.
Get Car Insurance for a Classic Car or Youngtimer
Special insurance is often available for classic cars or modern classics at a reduced rate. This insurance is intended for cars used for recreational purposes and not for daily commuting. The minimum age requirement for classic car insurance is 25 years.
Purchase Car Insurance for Import or Export
When importing or exporting a car, you’ll needtemporary auto insurance. We offer options for that as well. For example, you can choose a 1-day liability insurance policy for an RDW inspection with a one-day license plate, or 14-day liability coverage for exporting a vehicle.
Getting Car Insurance as a New Driver
As a new driver, you can easily get standard auto insurance. Keep in mind, however, that the premium is often higher due to your limited driving history.
Getting Car Insurance with a Negative No-Claims Record
Do you have negative claim-free years? If so, your premium will often be higher, and you’ll have fewer insurers to choose from. In that case, you can turn to De Vereende, a specialized provider that insures high-risk policies.
Getting Car Insurance with a Criminal Record
Do you have a criminal record? If so, your premium will often be higher, and you’ll have fewer insurance companies to choose from. In that case, you can turn to De Vereende, a specialized provider that insures high-risk cases.
These factors determine your auto insurance premium
The cost of your car insurance depends on several factors.
Age
Younger drivers often pay more because of the higher risk and fewer claim-free years
Residence
In urban areas, the risk of damage or theft is higher than in rural areas
Claim-free years
The more claim-free years you have, the higher the discount on your premium
Car weight
Heavier cars are often more expensive because they cause greater damage in the event of an accident
Number of kilometers
The more you drive, the greater the risk of damage
Type of car
Expensive, fast, or new cars often result in higher insurance premiums
Coverage
The more comprehensive your coverage and your supplemental insurance plans, the higher your premium
Payment Terms
If you pay annually, you sometimes pay a lower premium than if you pay monthly

Frequently asked questions about car insurance
What factors determine the cost of car insurance?
In addition to coverage, insurers consider risk factors such as the driver’s age, place of residence, and annual mileage. The premium amount may also increase due to external factors such as inflation and rising repair costs, which insurers factor into the premium.
How do you find affordable car insurance?
One of the most frequently asked questions is how to find affordable car insurance that’s also a good fit for you. You can do this by first comparing premiums based on your situation, such as your age, car, and number of claim-free years. With our comparison tool, you can quickly see the differences in price, coverage, and terms.
It’s important to consider not only the price, but also exactly what you’re getting. For example, a slightly more expensive car insurance policy might sometimes be a better choice because it offers more comprehensive coverage and better terms. So choose a policy that suits your car and matches its value.
This way, you can avoid being underinsured or paying too much for your car insurance. It’ll help you find the best car insurance for you. Do you already have insurance? Then you can quickly see if another car insurance policy is a better fit for you. Want to switch? Be sure to cancel your current policy only after your application for the new insurance has been accepted, to avoid being left without coverage.
Finally, you can further lower your premium by making informed choices. Consider opting for lower coverage or a higher deductible. Also, take a critical look at supplemental insurance and compare the various supplemental coverage options so that you choose only what truly fits your situation. In addition, compare payment terms; with some insurers, paying annually may be more cost-effective than paying monthly.
How do claim-free years and no-claim discounts work?
Claim-free years are the years in which you do not file a claim, and they form the basis for your premium discount. The more claim-free years you have accumulated, the higher your discount. This discount is determined using the bonus-malus scale, a system that insurers use to increase or decrease your premium based on your claims history.
The no-claims discount can be as high as 80 percent. If you file a claim for damage for which you are liable, you will generally lose 5 claim-free years. As a result, you will usually pay a higher premium, unless you have no-claims protection. Exactly how no-claims protection works varies by insurer.
What happens if your car is severely damaged?
In the event of severe damage, such as after a car accident, the insurer assesses whether repairs are still possible and cost-effective. If the repair costs exceed the current market value, the car is often declared a total loss.
In that case, you will usually receive a payout equal to the car’s current market value. Keep in mind, however, that the amount of the reimbursement depends on your coverage, and that replacement transportation will be reimbursed if the damage is covered by your insurance and you meet the conditions.
How do you file a claim with your car insurance company?
You can easily report a claim through our online customer portal or by contacting us by phone. You can fill out all the necessary information using the online form. As soon as we receive the completed claim form, we will contact you to process the claim further.
What is a registration code?
You will need your vehicle' s registration code when you transfer the vehicle to another owner's name, when you apply for a license plate suspension, when you have the license plate cancelled at the registration desk, or when you scrap the vehicle.
What additional coverage options can you choose with car insurance?
In addition to the various coverage options, you can choose from supplemental auto insurance policies that offer extra protection. These include passenger insurance, legal assistance, and roadside assistance.
Which additional coverage makes sense depends on your personal situation and how you use your car. By choosing only the relevant add-ons, you can keep your premium affordable.
Who is considered a regular driver for the purposes of auto insurance?
The regular driver is the person who drives the car most often. This does not necessarily have to be the car’s owner, but must be correctly stated when taking out the insurance policy. The regular driver affects the premium, because insurers assess the risk based on age and driving experience. If this information is incorrect, it may have consequences when filing a claim.
Can you get car insurance without a Dutch license plate?
A Dutch license plate number is required to purchase insurance. Insurers use the license plate number to retrieve vehicle information and calculate the premium. If you don’t know the Dutch license plate number yet, we can still calculate a preliminary premium based on the make and model of the vehicle.
Please note that this premium may change once the license plate number is known and all details have been definitively verified. In situations such as import or export, temporary solutions are sometimes possible.
