How do I compare car insurance policies ?

Want to know if a car is insured? You can check this easily and for free on the RDW website.

  1. Go to the RDW website
  2. Next, enter your car's license plate number
  3. Select the "Basic" category
  4. Click on “Vehicle Status”
  5. Now you can check under “WAM Insured” to see if your car is actually insured

Where is my car insured?

Unfortunately, the RDW website does not show where or how your car is insured. You can find information about your car insurance policy elsewhere. Log in to your insurer’s website, or look for your insurance policy statement or green card (international insurance certificate). Alternatively, check your mail, email, or bank statement for information about your car insurance.

Found out where your car is insured? Then check right away to see if the coverage still meets your needs. If necessary, adjust your insurance or switch to a cheaper car insurance policy.

What is the Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act (WAM)?

The WAM is a law that requires owners and operators of motor vehicles to purchase liability insurance. This law applies to all motor vehicles on public roads in the Netherlands. You can complete the WAM insurance check at the RDW.

The Consequences of Not Having Car Insurance

Are you planning to drive without insurance? If so, that will have (serious) consequences if you're pulled over by the police or cause an accident.

Is your car not (yet) insured, but do you want to hit the road? Then take out car insurance right away. It only takes a few minutes. Most applications are approved immediately, and you can hit the road right away with temporary coverage.

Driving an uninsured car has the following consequences:

Fine from the RDW

The National Road Administration keeps track of all kinds of information about cars, such as whether they have passed their APK inspection, have been sold or de-registered, and whether they have at least third-party liability insurance. Is your car uninsured? Then you risk a fine of about €490— even if your car isn’t being driven. As soon as the license plate is registered in your name, the car must be insured. You can receive a fine for an uninsured car up to three times a year. That adds up to €1,200 per year—which is significantly more than what the annual insurance premium costs!

Police fine

Not only the RDW, but also the police can see whether a car is insured or not. Are you driving an uninsured car? If so, you could face a hefty fine. You are required to carry your insurer’s green card with you, as it proves that the car is insured. The fine imposed by the police is even higher than the RDW’s fine—specifically, €700. This means you could receive a fine from the police in addition to the RDW’s fine.

You are responsible for paying for any damages yourself

Did you get into an accident while driving an uninsured car? If so, you’ll have to cover the repair costs yourself. Car repair costs can be very high, ranging from a few hundred euros to thousands of euros. And that’s just for damage to the car. If there are personal injuries involved, the costs can be much higher. Not sure if your car is insured? Be sure to run a car insurance check!

CIS Registration

If you’re involved in a collision while driving an uninsured car, you’ll be placed on the CIS registry. As a result, you run the risk that no car insurance company will be willing to insure you. You’ll likely end up with an insurance company that specializes in insuring high-risk cases, but at a significantly higher premium than usual.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Car Insurance Check

How can I check if my car is insured?

You can easily check whether your car is insured on the RDW website. By checking the license plate number, you can see if a valid liability insurance policy is registered. This information is listed under “vehicle status” and then under “complies with WAM.”

Is my car automatically insured after the transfer?

No, a car isn't automatically insured just because the license plate is registered in your name. You have to purchase car insurance yourself in advance. Without valid insurance, you risk a fine and are not allowed on the road.

Where can I check if a license plate is insured?

On the RDW website, you can use the license plate check tool to verify whether a vehicle is insured. The tool displays the current insurance status as recorded in the RDW system. You cannot see who owns the car.

What should I do if it turns out my car isn't insured?

Take out liability insurance as soon as possible, because it is required by law. Until your car is insured, you are not allowed to drive it or park it on a public road. Driving without insurance can result in a hefty fine.

Your car is insured immediately when you purchase auto insurance. You will then receive temporary coverage until your application is approved.

How quickly is a car insurance policy registered with the RDW?

Insurance is usually registered with the RDW within a few minutes to a few hours. Always verify this using the RDW license plate check to make sure your coverage is active.

Can I get a fine if my car is uninsured?

Yes, the RDW automatically checks whether vehicles are insured. If your car is uninsured, you risk a fine of over €490.

You can also be fined by the police for driving without insurance. The fine for this is €700. In addition, your vehicle may be impounded or seized by the police.

So, insure your car right away.
