Home contents insurance for all your belongings

With home contents insurance, your belongingsare covered in the event of damage. All your belongings together are worth a lot. What if, for example, a fire breaks out or there’s a break-in? You could end up paying a lot of money to replace everything. With home contents insurance, your belongings are well protected.

By "household goods," we mean all the items in your home that are not permanently attached and can therefore be moved. These include furniture, clothing, and appliances.

You must insure items that are permanently attached to your home separately witha home insurance policy. Examples include the kitchen, bathroom, and fixed flooring.

Home contents insurance is not required

Home contents insurance is not required by law in the Netherlands, unlike liability insurance for a car or scooter. However, it is wise to purchase home contents insurance.

Your Home Contents Insurance Coverage

Most Comprehensive (All-Risk)

  • Fire damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Collisions and Falling Trees
  • Damage Caused by Drops and Impacts

Exactly what is covered varies by insurer. Therefore, always read the policy terms and conditions to find out what types of damage are covered.

Things in the garden

Home contents insurance often covers items in the yard as well, such as patio furniture, umbrellas, and tools. Damage caused by weather conditions or theft of plants is usually not covered.

Stuff in the garage

With home contents insurance, not only are your belongings inside your home covered, but often those in your garage or shed as well. This applies, for example, to tools or bicycles.

Be sure to check the policy terms and conditions, because additional insurance may be required for valuable items such as art or expensive equipment.

Things Outside the Home

Would you like your cell phone or jewelry to be insured even when you're away from home? If so, choose supplemental out-of-home coverage.

Valuables

You can include your valuables in your home contents insurance policy. However, the coverage is limited, and not all damages are covered. With an additional valuables insurance policy on top of your home contents insurance, you’re guaranteed comprehensive coverage for your expensive items.

The coverage provided by valuables insurance varies by insurer.

Damage Caused by One's Own Fault

Comprehensive household contents insurance offers the most extensive coverage for your belongings. It insures you against virtually any damage—even if you cause it yourself. Think, for example, of a glass of wine that tips over onto your rug.

Damage caused by major disasters such as floods or earthquakes is usually excluded. This insurance is ideal if you want maximum protection for your household belongings.

Coverage Under Home Contents Insurance in These Situations

1

Storm damage

Storm damage is often covered by home contents insurance, but the terms and conditions vary by insurer. Damage caused by water or falling branches is usually covered, but hail damage sometimes isn't.

Check your policy to see what is and isn't covered in the event of a storm. Avoid being underinsured and accurately calculate the value of your household belongings.

2

Lightning Strike

Damage caused by a lightning strike is often covered by home contents insurance, but there are differences between direct and indirect strikes. A direct strike, for example, can cause damage to appliances connected to the electrical outlet, such as washing machines and TVs.

Indirect strikes, such as a lightning strike nearby, can also cause malfunctions. Check to see if your insurance covers both direct and indirect lightning strikes.

3

Fire Insurance

Fire insurance is usually part of a home contents or home property insurance policy and protects you against damage caused by fire. While it is not required by law, it is a wise decision to take to avoid significant financial risks.

The premium depends on factors such as your address, type of home, and the coverage you want. Mortgage lenders often require you to purchase home insurance that includes fire coverage. Always take preventive measures, such as installing smoke detectors and keeping a fire extinguisher on hand.

Combine home contents and home insurance

Many insurers offer packages that include both contents and building insurance. Be sure to carefully compare the coverage, premiums, and terms. With a package, you often benefit from a discount and ensure you have comprehensive coverage. This combination is also known as home insurance.

Deductible in the Event of Damage

Home contents insurance often includes a deductible. This is the amount you must pay out of pocket before the insurer pays out. It’s usually between €100 and €450, depending on your policy and the insurer.

In some cases, such as a burglary or fire, you’ll always have to pay a portion of the costs yourself. Sometimes you can also choose to pay a higher deductible so that your premium is lower. In special cases, such as negligence or storm damage, the amount you pay out of pocket may differ.

Costs of Home Contents Insurance

Thecost of home contents insurance depends on a number of factors and varies by insurer:

family composition

insured amount

Type of Coverage

place of residence

burglary protection

architectural style

deductible

Take Out Home Contents Insurance

Home Contents Insurance for Every Situation

Home contents insurance is actually indispensable. After all, the items in your home can be damaged in many different ways—for example, by fire, lightning strikes, storms, burglary, or flooding. With home contents insurance, the insurer will cover the damage, and the damaged items can be repaired or replaced.

Apartment

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve rented or bought an apartment: of course, you want to make sure your (valuable) belongings are properly insured. With home contents insurance, you can ensure that your personal property—such as your furniture, electronics, clothing, etc.—is properly covered in the event of damage caused by, for example, fireortheft. Not everyone takes out home contents insurance.

It’s not mandatory insurance, after all. People either think they don’t need it or simply forget about it. Still, we strongly recommend that you take out insurance for your household contents. Your household contents are worth more than you think.

Rental Home

If you own a home, you need both building insurance and contents insurance. But if you rent a home, building insurance isn’t necessary—the landlord already covers those costs. However, contents insurance is recommended if you rent an apartment or house, even though it isn’t required.

When you rent a home, you have to deal with the concept of “tenant improvements.” This includes improvements you’ve made to the property yourself but will leave behind when you move out. Examples include improvements to the bathroom or kitchen. Since you paid for these yourself, they are your property.

But of course, you can’t take a bathroom or kitchen with you when you move; they’re part of the house. Normally, this is covered by building insurance, but if you’re renting, you don’t have building insurance yourself. With “tenant’s interest” coverage, you can include the improvements you’ve made under your personal property insurance.

Student House

Has your child just moved into a dorm? If so, his or her belongings are no longer covered by your home contents insurance. If your child is registered at a different address, he or she must take out home contents insurance for that address.

Be sure to carefully review the insurer’s terms and conditions regarding student housing. Sharing common areas, in particular, increases the risk for insurers. How do you know whose belongings are whose? Who is responsible for taking out contents insurance for these items? And who will receive compensation in the event of damage? In addition, the risk ofburglaryortheftis much higher in a student residence.

For this reason, many home contents insurers require that the student room be lockable. The insurer may also require that roommates take out insurance for their rented portion of the room.

Should I get insurance as a student?

Home contents insurance for students isnot required by law, but it is definitely recommended. By taking out a policy, you insure your personal belongings in your home or room. These might include your laptop, furniture, clothing, television, and much more.

Home Contents Insurance for Anti-Squatting

Even if you’re living in a squat, you’ll want to make sure your belongings are properly insured. However, some insurers are quite reluctant to insure a squat. That’s because they don’t know how long you’ll need the contents insurance. After all, you could be evicted from the property at any time.

Short-term insurance or early termination of a policy costs the insurer a lot of money. Furthermore, many insurers consider anti-squatting housing to be unsafe. They assume there is a higher risk of damage. That’s why the premium is often a bit higher if you live in anti-squatting housing.

Home Contents Insurance When Moving

Items can easily get damaged during a move. The coverage provided by your home contents insurance during a move may vary by insurer. Your home contents insurance may only offer limited coverage during a move. Be sure to carefully review the policy terms well in advance of your move. This will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Home Contents Insurance with No Deductible

Some insurers allow you to purchase home contents insurance without a deductible. Whether it’s wise to opt for a deductible with your home contents insurance depends on your personal and financial situation. A high deductible isn’t necessarily wise or unwise in all cases. What you’ll need to consider is whether you can easily cover this deductible yourself in the event of a claim—even if that happens several times a year.

Your Home Contents Insurance and Moving

When you move, you can transfer your household property insurance to your new address. Be sure to notify your insurer of this in a timely manner. Also, check whether your insurance covers damage that occurs during the move—especially if you hire a moving company.

Moving is a good time to reassess the value of your household belongings and adjust your insurance coverage.

Switching Home Contents Insurance Providers

Switching to a different home contents insurance policy can be beneficial if you find a lower premium or better coverage. Check whether you can cancel your current policy and compare different providers. Be sure to review the terms and conditions to avoid duplicate coverage.

Compare Home Contents Insurance

To choose the right home contents insurance, you need to compare your options carefully. Don't just look at the premium amount; also consider the deductible and the coverage. That way, you can determine what's best for you.

Difference between the current market value and the replacement value of your household goods

If your belongings are damaged, home contents insurance usually pays out the replacement value, unless the current market value is less than 40% of the replacement value. In that case, the current market value is reimbursed.

For some items, such as antique furniture or stored belongings, the current market value often applies. Read the policy terms and conditions to see how your insurer handles this.
