Financially, of course, but also emotionally. That is why you should consider taking out boat insurance. Boat insurance is not mandatory in the Netherlands, but it is often wise. On Alpina.nl you can compare boat insurance without any obligation. This will give you an idea of the costs before you take out boat insurance.
Why take out boat insurance?
Although taking out boat insurance is not compulsory in the Netherlands, it is often wise. The Dutch waters are becoming more and more crowded. Because of this, the chance of accidents is increasing. That is why it is advisable to have at least a WA boat insurance. With this, any damage you cause to others is covered. An accident is always in a small corner and the repair costs of damage to a boat can quickly mount up. Not to mention personal injury. With a boat insurance you know for sure that you do not have to pay all the high costs yourself in case of damage. Would you like to insure your own boat as well? Then you can take out an all-risk boat insurance. This way, your boat is fully insured. By insuring your boat properly, you can always go out on the water with an easy mind and you will never be faced with unpleasant surprises.
What do you need to take out boat insurance?

Frequently asked questions about boat insurance
Am I obliged to take out boat insurance?
In the Netherlands, you are not obliged to take out boat insurance. However, in some situations third-party insurance is compulsory. For example at competitions, in a marina, a boat storage or on (a part of) the water. With a third-party insurance you are insured for damage that you cause to others with your boat. Do you sail outside Dutch waters? Then it may be that a boat insurance is legally required. This is for example often the case in countries around the Mediterranean Sea, like Greece, Croatia, Italy and Spain.
Can I insure a boat without a licence?
When you take out boat insurance, you will be asked whether you have a sailing licence. If you do not have a licence, this is not a problem. You do not need a licence for every boat. Whether you need a licence depends on the maximum speed and the length of your boat.
What does boat insurance cost?

Take out your boat insurance in 5 steps
Getting boat insurance doesn't have to be complicated at all. You can insure your boat easily and quickly at Alpina.nl. First calculate the premium online and then directly take out the boat insurance of your choice. After you have taken out your boat insurance online, the application will be processed immediately.
Step 1: Fill in some details about yourself and your boat
These include the type of boat you have, the length of the boat, the engine power in HP and the berth of the boat. You also indicate how many claim-free years you have already built up. Claim-free years provide a discount on the premium.
Step 2: Choose the desired coverage (third-party, third-party + limited Casco or all-risk)
Then you choose the coverage you want. You have a choice between WA, WA + Limited Casco or Allrisk. It is important to determine for yourself which type of insurance suits your boat best. For a very new or expensive boat you can best choose an all-risk boat insurance. For an older boat with only a small value, a WA boat insurance might be sufficient.
Step 3: Compare boat insurance on price and content
Then you can compare the boat insurance policies on price and content. Do not only look at the price, because with the cheapest boat insurance you might not be as well insured as you would like. Therefore you should also take a good look at the coverage and the policy conditions. Then you know exactly what you are and are not insured for. This way you will not have unpleasant surprises when you have damage or an accident.
Step 4: Take a good look at the most important policy conditions
When comparing boat insurances, it is important that, in addition to the differences in premium, you also carefully analyse the policy conditions. For example, take a look at the bonus/malus ladder, so that you know how much discount you get for years without claims and how much you have to surrender if you make a claim. It is also good to take a look at the coverage for damage caused by own defects. This can vary considerably.
