What do you need to insure a car?
Getting car insurance is not difficult. You need the details of the car such as the registration code and license plate number. And, of course, the owner's information. Such as the name, address, bank details and the number of claim-free years. A driver's license is not required to take out insurance.

This is what you need to buy car insurance
While applying for car insurance, various documents and information are requested such as your name, various code(s) and numbers related to your vehicle and identity. Insurance is always issued in a person's name.
This is usually the owner and does not have to be the main driver. It is not possible to have car insurance in the name of a business. You can, of course, purchase business auto insurance.
Got insurance? You are usually insured immediately with the provisional coverage.
Keep these details handy
Make sure you have all the necessary documents and codes on hand when you apply for car insurance. You will need the following information to purchase auto insurance:
1. License plate
2. Car registration code: this is the four-digit code on your registration card.
3. Personal data: name, address, place of residence and bank details.
4. Form of coverage: third-party, third-party limited or third-party comprehensive.
5. Claim-free years to determine whether you are entitled to no-claims discounts.
6. An estimate of the number of miles you drive per year.
Answer the acceptance questions asked
When buying auto insurance, you must answer a number of underwriting questions. Insurers use these questions to assess risk and determine whether they want to accept you as a customer.
Always be honest. An insurer can verify the information provided through external data sources. For example, Roy data for claim-free years and the CIS register for previous claims or incidents.
For example, the questions cover:
Your driving history such as previous damages or accidents.
Your insurance history. For example, whether you have been previously denied or insurance terminated.
Payment behavior such as arrears.
Any criminal convictions.
This information helps insurers assess whether you are an increased risk. In some cases, an insurer may reject your application or impose additional conditions, such as a higher deductible or limited coverage.
Number of claim-free years
The more claim-free years you have accumulated, the more no-claims discount you get from the insurer. As a result, you often pay a lower premium for the same coverage.
Insurers use data from the central Roy-data system to check your claim-free years. However, when you apply for car insurance, you usually have to enter how many claim-free years you have. By entering this correctly, you will get a correct premium calculation and avoid corrections or rejection of your application later.
So make sure you know how many claim-free years you have accumulated. You can see this, for example, on the policy sheet of your old insurance.
Choose from different types of car insurance
By default, insurers offer 3 forms of insurance. The third-party insurance (Wettelijke Aansprakelijkheid ) is required by law in the Netherlands. The other coverages are optional. You decide which coverage you choose and which additional options you want to add to your car insurance.
Insuring a new or used car
Which coverage you choose depends mainly on how old your car is and what you prefer in terms of risk. A WA Fully Casco is often taken out for (reasonably) new cars or if you do not have enough money to buy a new car.
For older cars, you can choose either the legally required third-party insurance or the slightly more comprehensive third-party limited cash coverage. TPL insurance only covers damage you cause to others. Damage due to a collision, windshield or new-value damage is usually only compensated under a more extensive coverage such as WA Casco.
Additional coverages
In addition to the standard coverage, you can expand your car insurance with additional coverage. Think for example of passenger insurance, roadside assistance or traffic legal assistance if you have legal problems after a collision.

Canceling current car insurance
Want to get a new car insurance policy and cancel your current one? In many cases, you have to cancel your old car insurance yourself when you switch to another insurer. You usually do this easily via email, an online form or your account with the insurer. Don't forget to include your policy number and desired termination date.
Make sure the effective date of your new policy matches the cancellation date of your current insurance, so you don't drive around uninsured.

Frequently asked questions about what you need when buying car insurance
What information is required when applying for auto insurance?
When applying for car insurance, you need a number of details, such as your license plate number, report code, date of birth, driver's license information, claim-free years and bank account number for direct debit.
You also often have to provide the number of miles per year and who is the primary driver. This information helps insurers determine the right coverage and premium.
How do I get car insurance for a used car?
For a used car, you purchase car insurance by entering the license plate number and the registration code, along with your personal information. You must have car insurance arranged the moment the license plate is in your name. You may not enter public roads uninsured.
What is the reporting code and where can I find it?
The report code is a four-digit code required to purchase car insurance. This code consists of the last 4 digits of the chassis number and can be found on your car's registration certificate or registration card. Insurers use this code to verify the vehicle with the RDW.
What should I do with my current car insurance when switching?
If you switch to another car insurance company, you must cancel your current car insurance policy yourself unless your new insurer arranges it for you. Make sure you make the switch properly to avoid uninsured periods. This is because your car must always have at least Third Party Liability (TPL) insurance.
What documents must I provide to insure my car?
Changing your car insurance is easy. To take out car insurance, in most cases you will need the following documents or data: your license plate number, registration code, driver's license, bank account number and the number of claim-free years you have accumulated.
