When we talk about electric cars, the link is quickly made to Tesla. It is an innovative car brand that is closely watched by other car brands. The insurance industry can also set its sights on Tesla. In Asia, they offer free car insurance when buying a car. Is this the solution to a problem?

Self-driving cars are now being tested very intensively. Also logical, those kinds of cars have to be 100% reliable before they are actually deployed. How the cars are to be insured may become another tricky issue. In the future, you will not be a driver of a car, but an occupant. At least if the car is fully self-driving. Tesla is already jumping on this.

Getting car insurance when you buy the car

In the Netherlands, you don't yet get car insurance when buying a Tesla. They introduced Tesla car insurance last year in Australia and Hong Kong under the name Insuremytesla. In addition to the car insurance, maintenance is also included in the purchase price. So it is similar to private lease, only the big difference is that you do pay off the amount in one lump sum. When financing the purchase amount, you can pretty much equate it to private lease. By linking car insurance, they are already jumping into the future when the Tesla will be fully self-driving.

Will you still be insuring your car in 10 years?

Recently, 26 European countries agreed to provide cooperation for testing self-driving cars. As early as 2019, it should be possible to drive these cars across Europe. It will probably still take years before the self-driving car completely displaces traditional cars, but the beginning is there. In terms of road safety, it would be good. After all, almost 90% of traffic accidents are due to human error. Once we are no longer driving ourselves, we are also no longer liable for an accident. An accident becomes an error of the system. In 10 years is probably too soon, but in 20 years individual car insurance may be extinct.

How can you insure a Tesla now?

You are not yet allowed to drive self-driving cars on public roads. The cars being sold now you still have to drive them yourself. Car insurance for a Tesla is more expensive because of the high list value. They are also heavier than the average gasoline and diesel cars because of the heavy batteries. This in turn also increases premiums. Of course, you don't drive a Tesla to save money either. Based on the fuel you save money, but in other costs it far exceeds non-electric cars.
