Financial checks when having a child
You are expecting and would like to share this with the whole world. Especially with your first child, it's all new and there's a lot involved. You probably don't immediately think about your insurances. Still, there are a number of things you need to have properly taken care of, both before and after the birth. In this blog post we would like to help you get started.
After the first few months of pregnancy, before the birth of your child, it is good to look at your insurance policies. What exactly is insured? Everyone in the Netherlands has compulsory basic health insurance. This 'basic package' includes obstetric care. You get this care both before, during and after childbirth. What does and does not fall under obstetric care may vary from one insurer to another. Additional insurance covers maternity care and in some cases even extra costs, such as pregnancy exercises.
After the birth of your child, you have three working days to file a declaration with the municipality. When you register your child, he or she will be given his or her own citizen service number.
Notifying your insurer of family expansion
In addition to reporting to the municipality, it is also important to notify your insurer of your child's birth. Preferably do this as soon as possible. In some cases, your child is co-insured for free. When the policy has family coverage, children are covered by default with liability insurance and legal expenses insurance. The baby's belongings are covered by the contents insurance, but make sure you are not underinsured because the value of the contents has increased due to the arrival of the little one.
Insurers like to have all insured persons on the policy sheet. To do this, you need to provide your child's date of birth, initials and last name. Do you have continuous travel insurance? Of course, check whether the travel insurance has coverage for a family with children.
Other important matters
Are you planning to work one day less after the arrival of your child? If so, it's a good idea to take a closer look at your mortgage if you own a house. Since your disposable income will be lower after the arrival of the child, you want to make sure that you can continue to bear the burden.
In addition, you can choose to increase your term life insurance. With term life insurance, a set amount of money is released when one of the two partners dies. With this amount, the remaining partner can, for example, pay off (part of) the mortgage and still make ends meet with less income by working less.
