Summer vacation is upon us! What are your vacation plans this year? Whether you're going to enjoy a sunny beach vacation, active hiking or cycling vacation or a fun city break, you naturally want to start your vacation relaxed. And that starts with good preparation. Tip 1: Check, check, double check

To travel carefree is to be sure you have everything with you. Have you ever found yourself at Schiphol Airport without a passport? Or discovered at your sunny vacation destination that you forgot your swimwear? Everyone knows how stressful it can be to make sure you have everything with you, especially if you also have to pack for other family members. So before you leave, make a comprehensive checklist of all the things you want to take with you. It may be a chore the first time, but after that you can use the list every year. That way the chances of forgetting something are slim.

Tip 2: Check your travel insurance

Have you taken out (continuous) travel insurance? Then check before you leave to make sure it is still completely up to date. Many continuous travel insurance policies were cancelled during Corona, and some policies were last reviewed before Corona. It is therefore important to check well before departure to make sure everything is still correct. Do you still have travel insurance? Does the coverage match your vacation destination (Netherlands, Europe or worldwide)? And are all traveling family members registered? If your travel insurance is in order, you can travel with peace of mind.

Tip 3: Don't give burglars a chance

During the vacation season, not only do people move out, burglars also go out more often during the summer especially. All those empty houses are, of course, a perfect target. Therefore, make sure you leave your home secure:

• Before leaving, check that all windows and doors are securely closed
• Connect some lights to timers so that they turn on at set times. This way it looks like someone is home
• Ask a friend, relative or neighbor to take the mail off the mat and put it in a place where burglars cannot see it. In fact, a pile of mail on the mat is one of the easiest signs that someone is not home for an extended period of time
• Often we leave the house spick and span, but for once leave a cup or glass on the table and place an open newspaper or magazine next to it

Tip 4: Don't post your vacation snapshots directly to social media

In this digital age, it is tempting to immediately share those beautiful vacation pictures on social media. Be careful about this, however, as thieves are also watching. Sharing your vacation photos immediately shows that you are not at home. Therefore, wait to post them until you are back home.

Tip 5: Carry different means of payment

In more and more countries, banks are charging fees for PIN payments. This is especially true in Germany, Greece, Austria and Spain. You can avoid this by bringing your own cash. Keep in mind that your travel insurance company has a maximum compensation in case of loss or theft. When taking out travel insurance, you can choose the amount of money you want to insure.
