Mandatory safety features in new cars

If it were up to The European Union, all new cars would become a lot safer starting in 2022. They want to do this by mandating a number of safety features in cars.

The European Council earlier submitted a proposal to the European Commission who accepted it. The proposal must now be approved by the European Parliament. If the majority of the European Parliament approves the proposal, the safety features will be mandatory for all new cars starting in 2022.

The main reasons for introducing these safety measures are: to improve road safety and drastically reduce the number of traffic accidents.
In addition, it will reduce insurers' claims burden on auto insurance.

Immobilizer with alcohol lock

What exactly do the new safety measures entail? One of the measures to be introduced in 2022 is the alcohol lock. Motorists are required to blow before starting the car. When they have drunk alcohol, it is not possible to start the car.

It is not only the alcohol lock that should become a mandatory feature in new cars. There are eight other safety features besides the alcohol lock that new cars would have to comply with starting in 2022.

Good insurance

To contribute to road safety, it is important that you follow traffic rules. In addition to having good car insurance, it is important that you always wear a seat belt, do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and do not drive for too long in a row. In addition, it is not wise to drive when you are overtired.

Insurers also contribute to increasing road safety. For example, occupant insurance payouts may be reduced for failure to wear a seatbelt or even nothing is paid out. It is also possible that the damage to the other party is compensated by the insurer, but then recovered from the driver under the influence.
