Traffic fines up in 2019

It will not have escaped your notice. Traffic violation fees have gone up again in 2019. What exactly does this mean for you?

The increase in traffic fines comes to about five euros for fines up to 100 euros. Fines above 100 euros will be 10 euros more expensive on average. The fine amount for exceeding the speed limit changes, compared to 2018, by a few euros. This differs about one to seven euros.
Fines for other traffic violations also increased from 2019. For example, for holding a cell phone while driving, you will not pay €230 but €240.

The administration fee has not changed in 2019. You will pay the usual administration fee of nine euros on top of each fine. The administration fee was set at nine euros from the beginning of 2016. In previous years, the administration fee was seven euros.

When to be fined?

In the Netherlands, you will be fined for relatively minor infractions. A speed violation of more than 30 km/h (on the highway at 40 km/h) results in a hefty fine or a summons. For a speeding violation of 50 km/h or more, the police will immediately reclaim the driver's license, when stopped. The prosecutor or judge then determines how long your driver's license will remain withheld.

Payment scheme reduced

While in 2018 it was only possible to make payment arrangements for fines starting at €225, in 2019 this limit has been lowered to €75.

This reduction applies to the so-called Mulder fines. These are fines for traffic violations imposed under the Administrative Enforcement of Traffic Regulations Act (Wahv). As an implementing organization of the Ministry of Justice and Security, the Central Judicial Collection Agency collects these traffic fines, among other things.

Lowering the limit from €225 to €75 can prevent traffic fines from rising. Thus, the broadening of the payment arrangements policy contributes to the prevention of problematic debts. The payment arrangements policy ensures that collection is not only efficient and effective, but at the same time socially responsible.
