Are my children co-insured on funeral insurance?

With funeral insurance you cover the cost of your funeral so that your next of kin will not be faced with high costs. When you have children, you may not immediately think of taking out funeral insurance. However, it is wise to look into this. With some insurance companies, children up to a certain age are included in the funeral insurance for free. In other cases, you have to take out separate insurance for your child.

Funeral insurance; children not always covered for free

The moment you indicate that you have children, many insurers allow you to co-insure your children for free on your policy. But beware, this varies from one insurer to another. In some cases, it is not free or sometimes it is not even possible to include your child on your policy. At Alpina we can, if desired, find out for you whether there are possibilities to include your child on the existing policy.

With a number of insurers, it does come at no cost and this free insurance coverage often even extends to age 18 or 21. How long the child can be co-insured for free depends on the funeral insurer and the policy terms. Depending on which insurer you have, coverage expires from a certain age and with it the right to a benefit for you child(ren). From that point on, it is wise for you or your child to take out their own funeral insurance.

The cost of a funeral or cremation has risen in recent years and this increase is expected to continue. The moment no funeral insurance is taken out, the next of kin will pay for the cost of the funeral.

Check the coverage and terms of your funeral insurance policy

The coverage of your child's funeral insurance policy can vary greatly among themselves and may have various exclusions. In some cases, children's funeral expenses are covered up to the highest insured amount of the policyholder, such as the parents. In others, again, you pay a so-called child premium up to a certain age. In some "old" policy terms, children are still sometimes co-insured for free, but only after an age of, say, 30 days. If a baby dies before that time or is born lifeless, painfully nothing is paid out. We have not found this provision in the current terms and conditions of funeral insurance policies. Therefore, read the policy terms and conditions carefully. If you can't figure it out? Feel free to contact us.

Taking out funeral insurance for your child?

Will your child turn 16, 18 or 21 years old soon? If so, your child's coverage on the funeral policy will expire. At Alpina, we are happy to help you think through and negotiate a suitable funeral insurance policy for your child.

Register your child with your funeral insurance company

After the birth of your child, you obviously don't think about your funeral insurance right away. But don't forget to register your baby for coverage. This is often required 30 to 60 days after birth. Also consider signing up with other insurances, such as health insurance and liability insurance, for example.
