How long do claim-free years remain valid?

Claim-free years were valid for one year after cancellation of a motor insurance policy. Because of recent market developments, several insurers have broadened their policies of recognizing claim-free years.

A positive development that Alpina supports. Therefore, we will now grant the claim-free years up to 3 years after cancellation of a motor insurance policy. This entitles you longer to the years already accrued with the corresponding discount.

In what way can you prove claim-free years?

If the motor insurance is terminated, the Dutch insurer passes on the number of claim-free years accrued to the Roy-Data database. From the moment the insurance is terminated these claim-free years remain in force for 3 years and can then be used for a new insurance. After these 3 years the claim-free years expire and you have to start all over again to build up claim-free years.

Please note that claim-free years can only be used for one current insurance policy. They cannot be used for a subsequent insurance policy.

When the claim-free years are not mentioned in Roy-data, you can prove your claim-free years as follows:

Cancellation declaration/Certificate of foreign insurer

After termination of your motor insurance, you will receive a cancellation statement from the company. The accumulated 'pure' claim-free years are stated here.

Lease statement

Have you been driving a lease car? Then you can report the years of damage-free driving with the lease car as damage-free years. However, you do need to submit an original lease statement for this. You can request this statement from the lease company.

Employer statement how about claim-free years?

If you have driven an employer-provided car in recent years, we can award claim-free years after receiving the original employer's statement. The number of claim-free years to which you are entitled is determined according to the rules below:

  • Employer's certificate of 1 or 2 years entitles you to: 0 claim-free years
  • Employer's certificate of 3 years entitles you to: 1 claim-free year
  • Employer's certificate of 4 years entitles you to: 2 claim-free years
  • Employer's statement of 5 or more years entitles to: 3 claim-free years

What is the validity of claim-free years?

After terminating a car insurance policy, claim-free years remain valid for 3 years with most insurers. If you want to use the claim-free years with a new car insurance policy, you have to take it out within 3 years. After 3 years the claim-free years expire and you can no longer use them. You then start again with building up claim-free years and receive no or little premium discount when buying a new car insurance.

Roy-data claim-free years valid?

After canceling a car insurance policy, the insurer registers your accumulated claim-free years in Roy-data. When you take out a new car insurance policy, the new insurer can look up your claim-free years in Roy-data and link them to the policy. After the claim-free years are registered in Roy-data, they are valid for 3 years with most insurers. With some insurers this is only 2 years, and with others it is 4 or even 5 years. How long claim-free years remain valid with an insurer can be looked up in the policy conditions of your insurance.

Claim-free years valid for 3 or 4 years?

Unfortunately, claim-free years are not valid indefinitely. After canceling your car insurance, claim-free years remain valid for 3 years with most insurers. After this period the claim-free years expire and you start building up again. You will get less no-claim discount and thus pay more for car insurance. With some insurers claim-free years are valid for 4 years, and with some even for 5 years. Within this period you have to use an insurance with which you can use your claim-free years, otherwise they will expire.

Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022

Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
