How can I lift the suspension of my car?
When you suspend your car, you choose a period of 1,2 or 3 years. If you want to use your car before the suspension period expires, you can lift the suspension. This is done at the RDW and can be done both online and at the counter. If you lift the suspension, it will end immediately. It is not possible to lift the suspension for a date in the future. Lift car suspension online
You can lift your suspension online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via the RDW website. This is done as follows:
- Go to 'Cancel suspension of car' and log in with your DigiD
- Please indicate which suspension you wish to terminate
- You will then receive 2 e-mails from RDW. Only after receiving the second e-mail will the suspension be lifted immediately. This e-mail will also contain a confirmation and an end date for the suspension.
- As soon as the suspension has been lifted, you may drive the car on public roads again. Please note, however, that the car must be insured, must meet the MOT requirements and the road tax must be paid. These vehicle obligations take effect immediately after the suspension is lifted.
Your vehicle registration card (registration certificate in credit card format) will remain valid after the suspension. You will not receive a new vehicle registration certificate. The suspension is indicated on some paper registration certificates (if the car was suspended before 1-1-2014). You will then receive a new registration card and a registration code within 5 working days. If you have a paper registration certificate that does not mention the suspension, it will remain valid.
Lift car suspension at the ticket office
Of course, you can also lift the suspension of your car at the ticket office. This is done as follows:
- Go to a registration desk, RDW desk or RDW testing station
- Bring the registration certificate and the transfer certificate OR the registration card and the registration code. Don't forget a valid ID as well.
- A staff member immediately stops the suspension
- You will receive a paper receipt with the end date of the suspension
If you have a registration card, the first 4 digits of your new registration code will be stated on your certificate of suspension. Within 5 days, you will receive a letter from RDW containing the last 5 digits of the registration code. Your registration card will still be valid. If you have a paper vehicle registration certificate that mentions the suspension, you will also receive a new credit card-sized vehicle registration certificate together with the last 5 figures of the registration code. A paper vehicle registration without any mention of the suspension will remain valid.
What does it cost to lift a suspension?
Lifting a suspension is free of charge. Extending the suspension does incur a fee. Do you terminate the suspension before the expiration of the suspension period? Then you will not receive a refund. If you have suspended your car for 3 years, but you lift the suspension after 1 year, you will lose this money.
Lift the suspension: what to pay attention to?
When lifting the suspension of your car, there are a few things you need to take into account:
- After lifting the suspension, you must immediately resume compliance with the vehicle obligations. These are the third-party insurance obligation, MOT obligation and paying the motor vehicle tax. If you do not meet the vehicle obligations, you will be fined. Therefore, arrange this immediately with the lifting of the suspension of your car
- If you lift the suspension within 1 month after the start of the suspension period, you must still pay road tax over the period in which the registration number was suspended. In that case, the Tax and Customs Administration will send you an additional assessment.
- If you terminate the suspension before the end of the suspension period, you will not receive a refund.
