Car insurance for senior citizens: why more expensive?

It is common knowledge that car insurance for young people under 24 is more difficult to obtain than for someone who is older. The premium is also usually much higher. Young people under 24 are seen as a bigger risk. Figures show that these inexperienced drivers cause more damage. The same applies to older drivers. Do seniorspay more for car insurance because of this?

Car insurance for senior citizens

The three standard forms of car insurance are:

When buying a car, you should immediately take out at least a third-party insurance. Damages caused to others are covered by this insurance. For cars of 10 years or older, often only the obligatory third-party insurance is chosen. With this insurance, damage to your own car is not covered.

A good alternative with a broader coverage is the WA limited casco insurance. This coverage does not only compensate for damage to others. Damage caused by a collision with stray animals, hail and storm, lightning, fire and explosion, window breakage, theft and attempted theft also fall under WA limited hull cover. Owners of cars between 6 and 10 years old often choose this coverage.

Owners of new cars up to approximately 6 years old often choose the most comprehensive cover, namely all-risk insurance. With this cover, damage to your own car caused by collisions is also reimbursed by your own insurer. In addition, vandalism damage is also insured with the all-risk cover.

Car insurance for the elderly

Taking out car insurance as a 60- or 70-year-old usually does not pose any problems. Sixty-year-olds generally even pay a favourable premium for the insurance. Older drivers pay more for car insurance and have fewer options. With certain insurers, it is not even possible to take out car insurance as an over-75s. However, they can still remain insured with these insurers. They are no longer eligible for a new car insurance.

Claim-free years of senior citizens

Claim-free years make car insurance more affordable. They give you the right to a discount on the premium. By putting a car insurance in your name, you build up claim-free years. You build up claim-free years as long as you do not make any claims. Whether or not you have claim-free years makes a big difference. This can make a big difference for seniors. The difference in premium can be bridged.

Renewing driving licence as 65+ driver

Different rules apply to renewing a driving licence as a person aged 65 and over than when you have not yet reached this age. In many cases, your driving licence is not valid for the usual 10 years. If you are between the ages of 65 and 70 and you want to renew your licence, you can renew it until you reach the age of 75 using the usual procedure. If your licence expires between the ages of 70 and 75, you will be issued with a licence for a maximum of 5 years. For example, if you are 74 when your licence expires, you will be issued with a new licence that you can use until you are 79, without a medical examination.

From the age of 75, you must always undergo a medical examination when renewing your driving licence. You must also fill in a health declaration when applying. These two things determine whether your driving licence is renewed. When these tests have a positive outcome, your driving licence will be renewed for a maximum of 5 years.
