Registered defaulter: can I get car insurance then?
It happens to everyone, including you: you have lost your car insurance invoice, for example due to a move, and therefore you are not in time to pay. Or you make the payment, but due to a shortage in your account, the premium is not paid. One late payment is not immediately a problem. It does not immediately make you a defaulter. But if you pay several times late or don't pay at all, the consequences are far from negligible. There is a real chance that you will not get car insurance from a regular company if you are registered as a defaulter.
If you do not pay a bill from your insurance company, you will first receive a reminder from your insurer to pay. If you still do not pay, a second reminder will follow, possibly followed by another one. When you are 30 days in arrears with paying, your insurer can suspend your car insurance. Then you are no longer covered and your car is no longer insured. The insurance has not yet ended, but is sort of "frozen".
If you are more than 50 days in arrears with the payment of your premium, it is possible that your insurer will cancel your car insurance. Expungement means that the car insurance ends. You do not have to pay a premium anymore. This also means that your car is no longer insured.
If your insurer cancels your car insurance policy due to non-payment, a registration will be made with the CIS Foundation. This database registers all important insurance data and will share it. Insurance companies that are affiliated can use this database to obtain, exchange and store information about their own customers.

Buying car insurance as a defaulter - De Vereende
If you are registered as a defaulter, it is very difficult to get car insurance. At the time of application, you will be asked many tricky questions such as "Have you been refused or cancelled insurance in the past?". A "yes" will lead to a check by the insurer. He will look up whether you are registered in the CIS database. If this is the case, you may assume that most insurers will refuse your insurance application.
And then there is only insurance company De Vereende left. This company was specifically set up to insure special cases and risks. De Vereende accepts applications for insurance that are refused by regular insurance companies. De Vereende has a broader acceptance policy and accepts, in principle, anything and anyone. This makes it possible for you to get car insurance, even if you are registered as a defaulter.
Do bear in mind that the costs will be higher. Because with insurance, the greater the risk, the higher the premium. If you are registered as a defaulter, De Vereende runs a greater risk than usual. That is why this company has a number of conditions which you must respect when taking out insurance:
- The premium is higher
- You are obliged to pay three months of premium in advance
- You must pay a deposit
